21 days in China - Sep 2026 - First timer looking for feedback on my itinerary
Our take
Hey, fellow adventurers! I’m gearing up for my first trip to China in September 2026 and have crafted an exciting itinerary that spans 21 days, covering iconic spots from Beijing to Shanghai. I would love your feedback on my plans, especially regarding the feasibility of visiting Tianzi Mountain and Tianmen Mountain in one day. Additionally, I’m curious about the train transfer from Zhangjiajie to Hangzhou—should I allow extra time for the Changsha transfer? Any tips on avoiding tourist traps would be super helpful! Thanks!
I've been planning this trip for months and would love some feedback from people who've been. This is my first time in China.

- Day 1: Train from Chengdu (~5h), arrive evening, rest near Wulingyuan
- Day 2: Yuanjiajie (Avatar mountains), Golden Whip Stream
- Day 3: Tianzi Mountain + Tianmen Mountain (glass skywalk, 999 steps)

Questions for you:
- Is Tianzi Mountain + Tianmen Mountain doable in one day, or should I split them?
- The Zhangjiajie → Hangzhou train — is the Changsha transfer smooth or should I plan extra time?
- Anything on this itinerary that's a tourist trap I should skip?
Thanks in advance!

- Travelling to China in SeptemberHey everyone! I finally booked my flights to China for the first half of September and I'm trying to nail down my itinerary. I get into Beijing (PEK) on Sept 1st bright and early (5:00 AM) and fly out of Chongqing (CKG) super late on Sept 14th/15th at 1:00 AM. So that gives me exactly 14 full days on the ground. I tried to make the route make sense on a map, but I’m a bit worried I might be packing too much in. Here’s what I’m thinking so far: • Days 1-3: Beijing. The classics: Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. • Day 4: Beijing -> Shanghai. Grabbing a morning bullet train, then spending the evening wandering around The Bund. • Day 5: Shanghai. Yuyuan Garden, French Concession, and maybe going up the Shanghai Tower. • Day 6: Shanghai -> Zhangjiajie. Morning flight, then checking out Tianmen Mountain in the afternoon. • Day 7: Zhangjiajie. Full day exploring the National Forest Park (gotta see the Avatar mountains!). • Day 8: Zhangjiajie -> Furong. Taking the morning fast train to Furong ancient town and spending the night there. • Day 9: Furong -> Chengdu. This is where it gets a bit tricky. Train back to Zhangjiajie + flight to Chengdu. Hopefully hitting Kuanzhai Alley in the evening for some food. • Day 10: Chengdu. Pandas first thing in the morning! Then Jinli Street and obviously hot pot for dinner. • Day 11: Chengdu -> Leshan -> Chongqing. Day trip to see the Leshan Giant Buddha, then taking the high-speed train straight to Chongqing. Evening at Hongyadong. • Days 12-14: Chongqing. Liziba station, Yangtze cable car, Ciqikou, and Jiefangbei. I'll head to the airport late on Day 14 for my 1 AM flight. So, a few questions for those who have done this: Is this actually doable, or am I totally rushing any of these cities? Does the Furong -> Chengdu transit (train back to Zhangjiajie airport then flying) make sense time-wise, or is there a smarter way to do this? Are there any absolute must-sees I’m missing, or any obvious tourist traps I should just skip since my schedule is pretty tight? Any tips on getting around or just general feedback would be amazing. - 26‑Day China Itinerary (June 2027) — Feedback on Pacing & LogisticsI’m planning a 26‑day trip to China in June 2027 with one travel partner. We’ll be using high‑speed trains, Didi, and a few private drivers. I speak basic Mandarin and will handle communication. I’d appreciate feedback on pacing, routing, and anything that looks inefficient. Note: Dragon Boat Festival is June 9–11. Curious how much this affects crowds and transport. - Beijing is the city that exceeded my expectations: Trip ReportI had the pleasure of experiencing a truly wonderful and amazing seven-day trip to Beijing, China, in mid-April 2026. The weather was quite comfortable, even at its warmest, which allowed us to engage in numerous activities and extensive walking without any discomfort. This marked my inaugural visit to Mainland China, and I selected Beijing as my initial destination due to my profound fascination with its rich history and vibrant culture. Naturally, I also eagerly anticipated the opportunity to visit one of the world's most remarkable wonders, the magnificent Great Wall. Here is my 7 days itinerary: Day 0 - Arrival - Arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport at noon - Attended the flag-lowering ceremony in Tiananmen Square and was able to see the lights of the square in the dark - Had dinner in Qianmen Street Day 1 - Forbidden City - Visited the Forbidden City. This is very huge and insane so we took our whole day to explore the area and be able to smell the roses - Jingshan Park in late afternoon to see the Forbidden City uphill. It was pouring that time but seeing the Forbidden City on this different perspective was amazing! - Strolled in Wangfujing Street Day 2 - Great Wall in Mutianyu - Explored the Mutianyu section by taking the cable car up in Tower 14; be able to hike all the way to Tower 20 from Tower 14; from Tower 20, we went all the way to Tower 1; from Tower 1, we hiked back and went to queue for the toboggan ride in Tower 6. We spent the whole day for this, my legs were feeling like mashed potato because of the hike but it was so worth it! Day 3 - Temple of Heaven - Explored Temple of Heaven - Went to CBD to see the CCTV Headquarters Day 4 - Summer Palace - Explored the Summer Palace, rode the boat, and strolled the area in relaxed pace - Went to see the Olympic Park before sunset so I was able to see both in day and night time. This was so worth it! Day 5 - Lama Temple and Hutongs Nearby - Visited Lama Temple - Explored hutongs such as Nanluogixiang and Mao'er - Stopped at Bell and Drum Tower and watched the locals playing jianzi. Was able to buy one to play at home! Day 6 - Universal Studios - Wrapped our itinerary with a theme park Day 7 - Departure - Going back to my home country I have been researching for three months for this trip and I would say that this itinerary went so smooth! I am a fan of exploring one city in longer time as I want to feel the vibe of the city and be able to explore in relaxed way. All reservations were made in WeChat app. I found booking on WeChat less cheaper (I found those 3rd party apps have charges) and navigating it was super easy (might be because I am using Galaxy AI go translate everything - I am using S24 Ultra though). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! Willing to help! submitted by /u/babyflo97 [link] [comments]
