~6 Month Europe & Asia Trip
Our take
Hey y’all!
Not exactly sure where to post this, but my husband and I are planning a trip for the year 2029 and are starting to build our itinerary. Our locations will be (this is a rough draft, so we’re open to changing them):
-Spain (2 weeks - Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga)
-Switzerland (1 week - Lauterbrunnen)
-Italy (2 weeks - Rome, Florence, Bologna, Venice)
-Bosnia & Herzegovina (10 days - Sarajevo, Mostar)
-Montenegro (1 week - Kotor)
-Albania (10 days - Sarandë, Tirana)
-Greece (2 weeks - Athens, Naxos, Crete)
-Japan (2 weeks - Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka)
-Philippines (10 days - Manila, Palawan)
-Vietnam (1 month - North)
-Thailand (1 month - Chiang Mai/Islands)
-Indonesia (If leftover money/time, Lombok)
We’ve already been to Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia (Bali), but are going to knock out a ton of places on our bucket list. We love everything: good food, good architecture, swimming/hiking/adventuring, etc.
We don’t really party or drink much, and like to relax and go with the flow a majority of the time. We’re budget/mid travelers, so we’re still crunching the numbers to see what our cost would be, excluding flights (eurail pass? airbnb’s? boats? cooking/restaurants?). It’s totally a toss of a coin, so we’re kind of just looking at other people’s averages right now to get an idea. We’re thinking between $30-50k USD.
Here’s a few of our questions for y’all:
If any of you love a certain country on the list and have something that travelers can’t miss, what is it? We’re totally flexible and willing to add/take away days to see more things.
What are some money saving tips in each country, if you have been there/lived there? Would love to add to our ever-growing list, and just trying to cover all of our bases!
What food would y’all recommend we try? We’re adventurous when it comes to good eats, so we’d love to hear y’all’s experiences!
While we’re in the area, are there any countries/cities we should stop in? We’re going to most likely have a few extra spots on our Eurail pass.
If there’s any other stories/tips/tricks y’all have, we would absolutely love to hear them.
We’re excited for this trip of a lifetime! Thanks in advance!

- First time in Italy, need help!Hello, A friend and I are celebrating our 40th birthday(s) in Italy this September and we would love some help/suggestions to help planning. We are two single gals that are traveling as budget friendly as possible but still want to stay in accommodations that feel safe, friendly and offer private bathrooms. We love meeting other travelers and are open to homestays or local b&b's when possible. My dream day in italy would include seeing art, exploring the history, eating homecooked food with locals and dancing with cute boys haha. I am vegetarian but no other crazy restrictions. We both love wine, and we would love to meet folks our age and be away from touristy crowds. We have a general itinerary planned but need some support: any cities we should edit/add/remove where to book trains vs renting a car any recommended places to stay. people to meet, places to make reservations for now, etc would be very helpful help around planning our time in Tuscany & Sicily, we want to see a lot but also prefer slow/easeful travel vs maximizing output. any tours or excursions you recommend things we MUST see/do in certain places We basically are feeling a little stuck on how much we need to book now and how much we can "wing it" when there. We are currently trying to figure out housing that is flexible with our time. Our itinerary: August 23-28: Geneva August 28-1: Venice September 1-8: Dolomites (mostly booked but open) September 9-11: Florence September 11-16: Tuscany (we booked a farm stay in Volterra but dont know if we should book multiple stays across different regions or stay in one place and do day trips) September 16-20: Ischia/Naples (other day trips) September 21-24 Ravello/Amalfi (but we are thinking about skipping this bc we heard its very touristy and expensive) September 24-30ish: Sicily (should we stay in one place, move around?) I'm new to reddit and new to Europe so appreciate kindness and curiosity! submitted by /u/LiveWonderFoodie [link] [comments]
- Thoughts on our honeymoon itinerary?Hello! We'll be taking a ~3-week honeymoon this September (maybe into early October). A bit about us: We enjoy walkable cities/towns with nice parks/green spaces, beaches, good food, coffee, wine, and cocktails! We prefer going to a nice wine bar or chill bar/lounge over a club. Right now we're for sure want to go to France and Spain, but are deciding between Italy and Portugal. Here's our rough itinerary: Fly into Paris for 4-5 nights (have been here before) Take the train to Cassis for 3 nights If we choose Italy: Fly to Milan for 3-4 nights Take the train to Bologna for 3-4 nights Fly to Barcelona for 3-4 nights (have been before) Take the train to Valencia (3-4 nights) Fly home (either from Valencia or travel back to Barcelona) If we choose Portugal: Fly from Cassis/Nice to Barcelona Take the train to Valencia Fly to Libson (4-5 nights, have been before) and likely take a day trip to Cascais. Fly home (Southern California) Also open to other city recommendations! Thanks! submitted by /u/tayyylooor [link] [comments]
- Sabbatical planning - three-month stints in different countriesMy wife (31F) and I (32M) are planning an extended sabbatical. We have always loved to travel and we want to have a big adventure before we embark on having kids. We have both traveled Europe and the US quite extensively. I spent a semester abroad in London and solo traveled 16 countries. My wife has backpacked a couple multi-week trips through Europe after college. We also have taken three or four week-long trips per year these past eight or so years. Some of our recent favorites have been Oregon, New Mexico, New York, Belgium/Netherlands, Maine, Boston, and Rome. We are not big on the backpacking lifestyle and not looking to hit as many countries as humanly possible in 12 or 18 months. But instead, we are thinking of spending 3 months in a location and using that location as a home base to travel the region from. This should allow us to live “local-ish” but also still take day/long weekend/week-long trips to other places on our list. We would not be working, so we would be able to really relax and enjoy our current environment. We would spend ~90 days in each location and mix in a few weeks back at home between stops to rest up and see our friends and family. Of course traveling like this will be more expensive than a traditional trip across the globe. Paying for 3 month apartments and then also ~30 days of Airbnbs while not at our primary location and then coming back to the US between each leg. We are prioritizing having a home base to feel like we can come “home” and relax as to not feel like we are just living out of a suitcase. Our current choices are: Amsterdam, Netherlands: August – October Melbourne, Australia: December – February Osaka, Japan: April – June Florence, Italy: August – October Mexico City, Mexico: December – February Where else should we consider in prime parts of the year? submitted by /u/rileynielsen [link] [comments]
- Is this a realistic travel plan?Hi all, I’m planning on leaving my job early next year and taking 9-12 months off to go travelling through south east Asia, leaving around Feb/March time) I’m just in the process of making some initial planning, obviously it’s quite far away and this is by no means a finished itinerary. I’ve just written a draft based on places I’ve been recommended by friends and things I’ve seen online. I’m fully expecting everything to change, but is what I’ve got down already below somewhat realistic in terms of logistics, timings, cost, etc? I really have no idea what I’m doing so any advice is very much welcome haha. Fly from London to Bangkok - 1 week Head into North Thailand (Chang Mai, Pai Chang Rai) - 5 weeks Cross over into Laos (Luang Prabang, VanVieng) - 2 weeks Down into Vietnam (Ho Chi Min, Hanoi, Hoi an, Ha Giang Loop) - 4 weeks Fly over to Sri Lanka (Sigiriya, Kandy, Hortain plains, Ella, Colombo) - 5 weeks Fly back to South Thailand (Phuket, Koh Samui, Phi Phi islands, Khao Sok, Krabi) - 5 weeks Over to Malaysia (Kuala lumpa, Tasman national park) - 2/3 weeks Then Indonesia (Jakarta, Bali, Java) - 4 weeks Fly over to the Philippines (Manila, Palawan (Coron + Elnido), Cebu) - 3 weeks Over to Australia and working my way up the east coast (Melbourne, Sydney, Byron bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Noosaville, Rainbow beach, Kgari, Whitsundays, Edmondson) - 8 weeks Then to southern New Zealand (Invercargill, Stewart island, Caroline Peak, Te Anau, Queenstown, Wanaka, Mount cook, Twizel, Lake Tekapo, Christchurch, Blenheim, Wellington, Taupo, Coromandel, Whangarei, Auckland) - 8 weeks Fly back to London from north New Zealand Of course I’m perfectly happy to just play things by ear when I’m out there and mix things up as I go along, but I just want to have a basic plan ready. Also how much roughly would a trip like this be expected to cost? I’m thinking close to £20k but I have no clue really what to expect. Cheers! submitted by /u/WaffleOfWar70 [link] [comments]
