Advice for traveling within the US?
Our take
I (20M) and my girlfriend (20F) want to start traveling. my 21st is in a few weeks which i know is going to help. So will hers be by the time we take our first trip most likely.
We are from the southeast of the US. Neither of us have really been out of the south, at all. I have been as far as the keys, and dallas (I was not in charge). No farther north than NC. We like to take day trips. Do that once every month or two. First trip I/we ever took where I was in charge was new year this year we went to hilton head and got an airbnb for the weekend.
But I wanna start taking big trips. I have never flown. I also am not ready financially for this right now (obviously just wanna plan for now), but would like to be ready to take my first big trip within 6 ish months. My biggest places on my bucket list are New england, Pacific northwest, and California. More specifically:
- Boston + cape cod/nantucket/marthas vineyard in the summer, Acadia national park, portland maine, and driving through the region in the fall. Also wanna try lobster rolls
- Portland/Seattle, cannon beach, oregon/washington coast + nature, maybe olympic national park (and other good nature spots out there) Also wanna try their coffee.
- orange county and san diego (yes san diego and not LA with orange county, I am not necessarily against LA, but SD is more my style) Also wanna try their mexican food.
- Sacramento, lake tahoe, and yosemite.
Things that are important in helping choose a place include cool swimming water, cleanliness, friendly people or at least not rude, good food/coffee/chill bar scene, populated but not overcrowded, mix of nature/coast/city/crazy landscapes we’ve never seen before. etc. Also, my girlfriend wants to do these things too but isn’t nearly as picky as I am and trusts me to plan as long as we discuss and agree on what we do.
Any tips, ideas, places I didn’t list I should add, etc all would be good. My budget I am thinking might be 2.5k low end to 3.5k high end, stay maybe a week ish? Not sure, open to suggestions these aren’t firm. Dates maybe sometime between august and october, but again nothing set in stone. Also - I would like to travel outside the US but want to get used to at least my country first before going abroad.

Definitely the priciest of our options, so the hotel/room options aren’t the best, but we don’t care much for aesthetics, we just want a clean place. I really want to visit Big Sur, and so this is why it’s my top option personally. So so tough to find hotels/places to stay IN Big Sur, without paying an arm and a leg (and kidney, with some places lol) - Cannon Beach, Oregon: this is my second choice, and my boyfriend’s first. We both have never been to Oregon. Another place that offers best of both worlds with hiking/beach, it looks like. It’s also more in our price budget - and we could get a nicer hotel within the same price range as Carmel in CA’s options. - Near Los Angeles, we’ve been eyeing Newport Beach: I’ve personally been to Los Angeles before and loved it - but didn’t do anything beach/hiking related when I went years ago lol. My boyfriend is interested in seeing the city, but it’s not his first choice by any means. Planning//looking here has been a little more stressful with the amount of options available, it’s a little harder to narrow down. It’s lower on our list of options because we travel to cities often, and we want a more laid back “vibe” around us if that makes sense - Finally, Catalina Island in CA. Have not done much research here besides hearing good reviews from friends. Just an option we’ve thrown in the air. - Questions about my upcoming 60-70 days roadtrip the USA west?I am embarking on my first roadtrip in the west. I will be heading out to Yosemite this weekend with campsite booked. I am 24 year old guy who likes hiking. I am based in San Francisco. I am driving in a household car corolla. Yosemite -5 days Sequoia + kings canon - 2 days Zion- 2 days Great Basin- 2 days Bryce Canyon- 2 days Capitol reef -2 days Canyon-lands- 2 days Arches- 2 days Moab, UT-2 days SW Colorado(monument, BC, Ouray+silverton, Telluride, MV)- 8 days Wind river mountain range- 5 days Grand Teton- 2 days Yellowstone - 4 days Glacier- 4 days North cascades - 2 days Olympic - 4 days Mount Rainer - 2 days Redwood national and state park - 2 Total- 52 days + 4 days worth of travel. - 4500 miles - $6k budget Questions: If necessary, I can still add more 10-15 extra days. Any major gaps or must add regions I am missing? Cities(Boise, Portland, Vegas, Denver) worth visiting? I cross Death Valley on way to Zion but is it late now for DV camping? And Is sawtooth worth extra milage? I am honestly so scared about backpacking 5 days in wind river range due to bears. I don’t want to put myself in high risk since I am solo beginner. At the same time, i want to explore this amazing place. Should i skip it totally? I don’t think i can sleep at night out there camping. I am going with $6k budget. So I am going to cheap out lodging. - Planning a California trip — would love some advice 🙏So, me and my husband are planning a 2 week trip to the US, flying in and out of San Francisco and we will have a car for the whole trip. Ideally, I want a mix of cities, scenic drives, and 1 week based in LA (not rushed). We came up with this plan and wanted some actual experienced people to maybe give their advice. - ISO stateside (usa) couple’s destinationmy boyfriend (28m) and i (25f) are looking to plan our first couple’s trip. since it’s the first, ideally we’d like to keep it somewhat budget friendly. we would be flying out of nyc, and want to keep the destination within the states before branching out internationally. we’d like somewhere with a mix of activities/things to check out and beach availability. trying to plan for sometime in july for about 5 days or so. initially i was considering florida, cali, or possibly south carolina. neither of us have traveled very extensively, so any more experienced input would be awesome :) not really looking to club or get too heavy into nightlife, somewhere with a good scene to shop, eat, and sightsee, maybe visit a theme park (destination contingent) or a historic area, and spend some time beaching. if possible somewhere where we don’t need to rely on a rental car would be great too, but if necessary we’ll factor that into our budgeting. any recommendations are much appreciated! thank you for the help in advance :) submitted by /u/cgrace391 [link] [comments]
