But Interrail Pass Or Book Trains?

Our take

Planning an epic 15-day adventure through mainland Europe with your squad sounds amazing! As you travel from Zagreb to Berlin, you're faced with the choice between booking individual train tickets or opting for an Interrail Pass. While some routes may seem cheaper when booked separately, the fear of rigidity and stress can overshadow the excitement of your journey. With flexibility in mind, especially as students on a budget, it’s essential to weigh the benefits of spontaneity against potential savings.

A group of 6 of us are travelling around mainland Europe for about 15 days in June and can’t decide whether to book our trains individually or go for an interrail pass.

Our route is Zagreb → Ljubljana → Lake Bled → Salzburg → Prague → Berlin, we have booked our accommodation and we are staying for around 2–3 nights in each place. We will be flying in and out.

When we’ve priced things up, It is hard to gage, some websites show booking trains as cheaper in theory, however i have seen that salzburg-prague and prague-berlin is showing as £85-£100 to book individually. We are slightly worried about how fixed everything would feel doing it that way, and it would seem a bit stressful, especially if plans change or we want to stay somewhere longer/leave earlier, so maybe the pass would be more beneficial, especially since there is a larger group of us, and would allow for everyone to get what they want to do done in the day.

For anyone who’s done a similar trip, did booking everything in advance feel as restrictive as it can seem or more stressful (especially if people are running late) or is it manageable once you’re there? I’m trying to work out whether the extra flexibility is actually worth it in practice, or if we’re overthinking it.

We are all students so the budget matters, but we also don’t want to spend the whole trip stressing about timings.

Any advice or experiences would be really helpful :)

thank you!
