Central America trip vs. Central Asia trip?

Our take

Are you torn between exploring the vibrant landscapes of Central America or the stunning mountains of Central Asia? After living and traveling in Southeast Asia for 1.5 years, you might crave a change of scenery during your summer visit to Canada. A trip to Guatemala and El Salvador offers a quick, colorful adventure, while a future journey to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan promises a more immersive experience over 3-4 weeks.

My husband and I have been living in and travelling around SE Asia for the past 1.5 years. We’ll be headed back to Canada this summer to visit friends and family. While we’re in the Americas, I’m tempted to do a Guatemala/El Salvador trip for a change of scenery travel-wise since we’ve been in Asia for so long and will be headed back to Asia again.

However, on the other hand, we’ve also talked about doing a trip to Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan/Uzbekistan sometime next year.

If we do the Central Asia trip, we’d probably spend 3-4 weeks there. If Guatemala/El Salvador, maybe 2 weeks (considering the length of time we’re back in Canada).

Alternatively, perhaps we only do either Guatemala or El Salvador and not both, for only one week and still save our money for the Stans.
