I'm heading to Chile for a 3 week trip mid may to early June and I have a full week open to explore an area. I was wondering if the lake district would be worth visiting in mid May? I know this is late Fall/start of Winter but it looks like there's a lot to explore even with cooler weather and I'd love to experience some of the more Patagonia-style nature that Chile has to offer. Any thoughts on if it's worth exploring during this time? Will hiking be an option? Any recommendations on where to go in the Lakes District? I'm also open to suggestions on mountainous areas closer to Santiago for weekend trips!
I am already planning to go to the Atacama Desert, Santiago, and Easter Island so just trying to see if I could add this region to my trip, especially with a full week free!

- Chile April 2026: Atacama Desert, Patagonia, and the Lake DistrictMy 11 Day Chile Itinerary which includes the Atacama Desert, Patagonia, and the Lake District. Day 1: Arrived in Santiago, took a domestic flight to Calama, then drove two hours to San Pedro de Atacama. Day 2: Went to Laguna Cejar to go swimming, visited Laguna Tebinquinche and saw flamingos, drove through Valle de la Luna, then ended the day with a stargazing tour. Day 3: Drove 2 hours to Piedras Rojas and laguna miscanti y miñiques. Day 4: Did an early morning tour of El Tatio Geysers then caught a red eye to Punta Arenas. Day 5: Drove from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales and walked around town. Day 6: Drove through Torres del Paine and did the Mirador Cuernos hike which is around 4 miles. Stayed the night in Torres del Paine. Day 7: Hiked Mirador Base Torres, it was a long day. Day 8: The weather was bad in Torres del Paine so I went back to Puerto Natales and spent the rest of the day and night there. Day 9: Drove to Punta Arenas and took a flight to Puerto Montt, then drove to Puerto Varas. Spent the rest of the day checking out the town. Day 10: Visited Petrohué falls and Osorno Volcano. Unfortunately the weather was bad on the volcano so it was short lived. Day 11: visited a nice park then took a flight to Santiago in the afternoon and flew back home! - Two Weeks in Chile (in October)We had a great time in Chile spending two weeks in the Atacama desert, Santiago and Valparaiso, wine regions near Santiago and the coastal town of Zapallar. We started in the Atacama desert. Wow what an experience like being on the moon. Incredible stars at night, the geography is unreal. After three nights we moved to Santiago and enjoyed the city for three more days. Museums, cafes, restaurants...do they call it the Paris of South America (or did I make that up)? If you go, the pork sandwich at Antigua Fuente is a must have. There are many vineyards and wine regions within a short drive of Santiago, so that's what we did. Our AirBnB was on a ridge and the clouds filled the valley in the night while we slept. Then Valparaiso for a few nights, enjoying the eclecticism and good food and art and culture and cafes. We drove along the coast to Zapallar, a well-off coastal community for Santiago residents with resources. We stayed in a lovely hotel overlooking the ocean, visited small towns nearby, and ate a couple meals at the fantastic seafood restaurant that's practically in the harbor. We had a car both in Atacama and then we rented one in Santiago and drove everywhere. I suppose you can do the desert through tour groups, but I always prefer having my own transport. - 3 weeks in Argentina in May — looking for destination adviceI’m doing a 3-week solo budget trip in Argentina in May, and I’m trying to figure out where to spend an extra 5 days. My current plan is: Buenos Aires + Uruguay: ~6 days Iguazú Falls: ~3 days Salta/Jujuy: ~1 week So I’ve still got about 5 days unplanned. I’ve already spent over 6 hours researching and can’t decide, so I’d really appreciate any advice. A few places I’ve considered but feel unsure about: Mendoza: I’m not really into wine, and while Ischigualasto/Talampaya look amazing, they seem hard to do without a car (I don't have an international driver license unfortunately). Península Valdés: not sure May is a great time for wildlife. Bariloche: looks beautiful, but I’m worried it’ll be too cold and that transport might be more limited in May. - Chile north to south?Hello travellers! It is a dream of mine to travel Chile end to end. Can you please offer any advice for the best way to make a north-south journey? Timeframe would be 3 weeks in December, accounting for approx. 1 week visiting Easter Island (inluding transit). Perhaps 1 week north, 1 week Easter Island, 1 week south?
