Croatia in 5 Days: Are Plitvice and Hvar Realistic or Too Ambitious?
Our take
Hi everyone 👋
I'm planning a trip to Croatia and I'd love your advice!
Here's my situation:
- I arrive at Split Airport on April 30th at 10:25 AM.
- I depart on May 5th at 11:20 AM.
- So I have about 5 full days.
Initially, I wanted to visit Plitvice Lakes and spend some time in Hvar.
But now I'm wondering if that's really a good idea given the limited time I have.
My main question is:
👉 Is Plitvice worth it with such a short stay, or should I adjust my itinerary and focus on fewer places?
I'm also undecided about Hvar:
- Is it better to stay on the island for 1 or 2 nights (not necessarily in Hvar itself), perhaps with a rental car?
- Or perhaps a day trip from Split without a car?
In short, I want to enjoy the trip, see beautiful places, but without too much stress.
So I'm open to any advice:
- What would you recommend I prioritize with 5 days?
- Should I skip Plitvice or include it?
- Do you have any suggestions for a well-balanced and enjoyable itinerary?
My wife proposed itinerary:
Day 1 - Trogir + Ferry to Hvar
Day 2 - Hvar
Day 3 - Hvar
Day 4 - Hvar > Split > Plitvice
Day 5 - Plitvice with return to Split
Day 6 - Return
Thanks in advance 🙏

- 6 day Croatia Itinerary - Split to DubrovnikHi everyone, my significant other and I are traveling from the US to Croatia in May for a week. We are flying into Split and out of Dubrovnik. No particular travel pet peeves or special focuses we have; we like history, food, nature, relaxation. We aren’t on a really tight budget but not ultra high end travelers either. I am happy to drive a car if needed and can drive manual, but it seems for our trip ferry may make more sense. Given our limited timeline, we don’t want to squeeze too much in though I know this will be a decent amount to tackle. I was told this itinerary would be doable from people who have been before, it seems consistent with some guides I’ve seen online, and I’ve tried to read through as many Croatia posts in r/travel as I can, but I wanted to ask if anyone had feedback! Split 2 nights, Hvar 2 nights, Dubrovnik 2 nights Sun 5/10 land in Split midday; walk around, tour palace; sleep in Split Mon 5/11 Krka day trip? Or just hang out in Split; sleep in Split Tue 5/12 morning catamaran to Hvar; hang out in Hvar Town; sleep in Hvar Wed 5/13 boat / island tour / biking; sleep in Hvar Thu 5/14 morning ferry to Dubrovnik; sleep in Dubrovnik Fri 5/15 morning walk the walls; sleep in Dubrovnik Sat 5/16 fly out of Dubrovnik 6:30am Re: Hvar, I know other islands like Korkula sometimes are recommended but I figured shoulder season hopefully means crowds aren’t quite as bad on Hvar, and it was just highly recommended by friends who went recently; but we're flexible! I assume cutting Split down to only one night would be too short particularly with jetlag even though my impression is that we should maybe prioritize other spots. Krka sounds wonderful but I do think it would be a lot to try to squeeze in. submitted by /u/Sagnolshmooly [link] [comments]
- Croatia itinerary doable?I booked a flight to Croatia for 12 days where I land at 4pm in Dubrovnik and fly out at noon so this gives me 10 full days. I don't really have crazy expectations just booked it on a whim, but my logic here is to immediately go to Split from Dubrovnik on arrival day and work my way back to Dubrovnik. So far on my tentative list I have - Split - Hvar - Dubrovnik - Plitvice - Kotor - Mostar I recognize that's a lot and looking to see where I can optimize day trips and also relax or potentially shave time on certain things. I'm pretty well traveled so getting around is not an issue and I'm not a budget traveler so I'm ok in what appears to be pretty overpriced (relatively) places like Old Town Dubrovnik and Hvar. I'm just looking for relaxing beaches, good food and beautiful scenery as I like to photograph. So any recommendations for like overlooks or spots to capture great photography are appreciated. I'm a pretty youthful late 30s so while I'm not trying to party like a 20yr old I'm fine with a little bit of going out and I know Croatia can be big on nightlife so as long as it isn't the equivalent of a college bar I'm ok with nightlife recommendations as well. Does it make sense to go from Split on down? Looking for any advice. Thanks! submitted by /u/Szimplacurt [link] [comments]
- Croatia in May: Zagreb, Rijeka, KrkHello! I’m planning a solo long weekend trip for 23-25 May and would love some advice. I’ll fly from Sofia to Zagreb, arriving Saturday around 10:00. Plan is to explore Zagreb a bit, have lunch, then take a bus/train to Rijeka staying there for 2 nights. I’m mainly after coastal vibes: beach promenades, sea air, relaxing walks. Sofia is landlocked and I’m a bit bored of cities/mountains, so the Adriatic is my main draw. Zagreb kind if reminds me of Bratislava where I lived for a bit and maybe it would be interesting? Initially I planned just Rijeka, but Krk island is nearby and more interesting for beaches. I’ve never been to an island before, so I’m considering a day trip. I don’t care about swimming/sunbathing,just walking along the shore. I have a few questions: Is late May suitable for walking on beaches with regular shoes, or are pebble sandals needed? Also, would it be odd/unacceptable to walk with shoes if there are sunbathers? Would you recommend Krk or somewhere like Opatija for better coastal scenery like beaches and hills? I’ll rely on public transport. Are buses the best option between Zagreb, Rijeka, and Krk? My rough plan is like this: Saturday: arrive Zagreb -> Rijeka Sunday: Rijeka + possibly Krk Monday: more Rijeka then Zagreb or straight back to Zagreb (flight at 22:30) Does this sound doable for ~3 days? I’m skipping car rental as I don’t like driving unfamiliar roads. Would it make more sense to skip Zagreb entirely and focus on the coast? Also, is it risky/expensive to book accommodation and transport last-minute in late May, or is it fine to stay flexible? Thanks! submitted by /u/Happy-Hour88 [link] [comments]
- Is 4 full days in Split Croatia too much?Hello! My girlfriend and I are booking an 8 day trip to Croatia in August, and we are trying to decide how we are going to split (pun intended) our time. Also good to note this is both of our first time traveling internationally. We currently have a (refundable) hotel booked in Split for 5 nights (we arrive at 5pm to start our trip) and 4 full days. I was told by a colleague that this is way too much time in Split. We were then planning on doing 2 full days in either Hvar or Bol and then 2 full days in Dubrovnik. Does this sound like a good breakdown, or do people have better recommendations? We are a young couple (both 23) and are looking to have a good balance of exploration, relaxation, and maybe a club or 2. submitted by /u/Sposierips [link] [comments]
