We've got someone diving headfirst into a late December to mid-February journey, and while they're a little worried about the "ideal time of year," we say: where's the fun in always going when it's sunny? This is all about embracing the winter glow and creating your own sunshine, even when the temperatures drop. Think cozy cafes, twinkling lights, and the kind of experiences that make you feel like the main character in your own adventure story. This itinerary is already packed with amazing spots, from the Iberian charm of Lisbon and Porto to the majestic Alps and the cultural heart of Central Europe. It's bold, it's exciting, and it's totally doable!

When it comes to planning an adventure like this, especially during the winter months, the energy and curiosity you're bringing are key! The itinerary itself is a fantastic starting point, and we're totally here for the idea of exploring Sintra's fairytale castles, getting lost in the historic streets of Madrid and Barcelona, and then soaring into the Swiss Alps. Imagine the crisp air, the possibility of snow-dusted peaks, and the sheer exhilaration of it all. The order of things can definitely make a difference, especially with weather. Starting in the warmer climes of Spain and Portugal and then heading towards the potentially colder, snowier regions of Switzerland and Austria makes a lot of sense. So to preface, I'm very aware this is not the ideal time of year for a trip to many of these places but it's unfortunately the only time I have free to go...

I'm still very much in the planning stage so would love to hear any of the unmissable things you would recommend in different places, restaurants, day trips, museums, activities, etc. I would also love to hear people's thoughts on the order of the trip (the Spain/Portugal part can't change but would there be any point ending in Switzerland and starting in Vienna in terms of Jan vs Feb weather or not really?). Also love to know any places people think need more/less time.

I'll be leaving late December after Christmas and coming back mid February. I will also be travelling with a friend living in Madrid for the Portugal stint of the trip.

This will be our first trip to Europe M28 & F27. Is there any countries or cities you think are worth adding/removing from our itinerary? Pro's/cons? We were also exploring other countries like Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden etc, however, they are quite costly & a bit out of the way in our itinerary. Europe Bound: A First-Timer's Adventure Through Italy & Switzerland
Making my first trip overseas. I’m an experienced road tripper on the lower 48 but this will be a new experience. I have done some research but wanted the perspective of real people who have been there before Heading out in Early September. Fly into Milan. Planning on spending 3 days in Northern Italy. After that head up to the Jungfrau area of Switzerland to spend 3 days there. Then off to Germany for a couple days. Be visiting my Aunt and Uncle near Ansbach for a couple days. Thinking about stopping at the castle of Mad King Ludwig on the way up. After that head down to Austria to spend a day. Then it will be off to Slovenia to spend 4 full days. Then end the trip with a trip to Plitvance Lakes National Park before flying home out of Zagreb. Thoughts? I am having trouble narrowing down Italy. Sounds like the Dolomites will be difficult to fit in with going to Switzerland after. For my interests of Nature, history, and local culture Verona sounds like a must. Then either Lake Como or Venice. I have heard mixed reports on Venice. Some say it has one of the best preserved history you can find. Others says it’s overrated, overcrowded, and the canals stink. Portugal & Spain in 12 Days: Your December Adventure Awaits!
Hello everyone, Im trying to figure out my itinerary to these two amazing countries. I land in Lisbon and fly out of Barcelona. Total duration 12 days. 22Dec to 2Jan. Could anyone recommend day splits or anything of that sort? Like 4-5 days Portugal and 6-7 days Spain? My plan of action is something like, land in Lisbon, next day head to Algarve and do sky diving and live around that area for a few days. Then head to Seville, Madrid and Barcelona and fly out to my hometown. I plan to spend NYE in Barcelona (as suggested) by internet ai. Obviously I can't do the entire countries in 12 days, so asking you folks if there's something I need to add or maybe skip. I'm travelling with my wife. We're both adventurers. I'm astonished by the Spanish and Portuguese history of conquest, so id happily visit museums and castles or anything that depicts their histories. Please suggest something. I went to Switzerland some time back and I enjoyed it, but reviews here made be believe I could've done a bit more. Hence, I am asking you folks. Cities I'd surely want to visit are Lisbon and Barcelona, as id be flying to and out from them. I don't mind taking a car, train or a flight for internal travels. Whatever is best for the time, id do it. My preference for cities are Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and maybe Valencia. Adventure activities: Sky diving and a bit of Hiking.
