Has knowing (or not knowing) a language ever made or ruined your travel experience?
Our take
Has knowing (or not knowing) a language ever made or ruined your travel experience? I spent four months in Finland on an exchange semester, and it was fascinating to navigate daily life without fully grasping the language. Even simple tasks like ordering food or asking for directions felt uniquely challenging yet rewarding. Language barriers can turn ordinary moments into memorable adventures or, at times, lead to amusing mishaps.
I did an exchange semester in Finland last year for 4 months, and it was interesting to experience travel and daily life without fully knowing the language.
Even simple things like ordering food or handling small tasks can feel different when there’s a language barrier.
What was your experience while traveling or living abroad and knowing or not knowing the local language, good or bad stories are welcome.
