I’m having problems in Buenos Aires - I couldn’t connect with the city. Has anyone else felt this way or have any suggestions?

Our take

Hey everyone! I’m currently in Buenos Aires and feeling a bit disconnected from the city. After exploring Latin America for months and loving places like Rio for their vibrant energy, I had high hopes for Buenos Aires. While the city is beautiful and safe, it feels a bit repetitive and lacks the cultural vibrancy I expected. I’ve enjoyed the amazing food, but the nightlife and daily atmosphere seem a bit subdued.

I’ve been in Latin America since October last year and have spent time in Medellín, Bogotá, Rio and Sao Paulo, and I’m currently in Buenos Aires.

I had extremely high expectations because of everything I read online. The city seemed perfect for me since I’m not really a beach guy, I don’t care much about living near mountains, and I love city life, cafés, bars, etc. However, after arriving here (2 weeks ago), I ended up feeling pretty disappointed.

The city is beautiful and pleasant in the central areas (not in the conurbano ofc), the parks are gorgeous and well maintained, I feel safe here, and the flat geography makes it incredibly easy to walk around.

That said, I expected a bit more culture, vibrancy, and excitement. To be honest, after about a week the city started to feel extremely boring and repetitive. People, although friendly, loyal, available, and supportive, seem somewhat soulless and sad, and even the street markets feel too quiet and boring, which is something completely new to me in Latin America.

Even the nightlife here, which gets praised so much on this subreddit and is definitely better than the daytime atmosphere, basically comes down to either going to a club that plays American pop/reggaeton, sitting at a bar eating and chatting with friends, or going to a tango show full of tourists. The days all start to feel the same.

I just came from Rio, where everything feels like a constant celebration of life, and there’s always this contagious energy in the air. There, I constantly felt this “brain chemistry shift", like a constant euphoria, catching myself thinking “life is beautiful” all the time. I realy was hopping to feel that way here, but I think I just didn't know the right places even tho I have been with locals constantly. Food is amazing tho.

Any suggestions? I already have a flight booked to Mexico City next week, but I’d really like to make the most of my final week here.
