In a world that's becoming increasingly interconnected, the experience of solo travel can sometimes reveal uncomfortable truths about prejudice and perception. One traveler, having explored various countries in Europe and currently in Singapore, reflects on their encounters while staying in hostels. Despite their friendly approach, they’ve faced unwelcoming reactions, leading them to question whether the negative stereotypes surrounding Indians are influencing these interactions. I started solo traveling about a year ago, I’ve been to multiple countries in Europe, and I’m in Singapore right now. I’ve mostly stayed in hostels with the intention of meeting new people
However, I’ve noticed that my smiles and hellos are not too well received most of the time. I know Indians have the “creepy” reputation online, so I was prepared for some discrimination, but I didn’t think it’d be this bad. Is it a thing or am I overthinking it?
