Madeira PR1 dangerous?

Our take

Are you considering the PR1 trail in Madeira this May? It's an exciting adventure, but it's smart to assess the risks beforehand. While the trail offers stunning views and a chance to connect with nature, some sections can be narrow and steep, which might pose challenges for those without climbing experience. If you’re cautious about heights and narrow paths, it’s essential to gather insights from fellow hikers who have tackled the trail.

At the beginning of May I am planning to walk the PR1 trail on Madeira. I would like to know if this trail is risky or dangerous.

I am in good physical condition, but I have no experience with climbing.

It’s not a problem if the trail is long or physically challenging, but I don’t like extremely narrow paths with a big cliff. I don’t want to take a risk where a small mistake could have serious consequences. I don’t want to walk along very narrow paths where, if you misstep or twist your ankle, you could fall off the cliff.

I will definitely walk the “Stairway to Heaven,” but I am unsure whether I will continue with the full trail afterward, depending on the level of risk.

Does anyone have experience hiking this trail?
