Minnesota's North Shore is an absolute vibe, and our recent August adventure there was pure magic! Coming from the sunny trails of Tennessee, exploring this part of the country felt like stepping into a whole new world, and honestly, we're already dreaming of our next trip back. We set up our home base at a cozy ski lodge in Lutsen, which was the perfect launchpad for exploring everything from the vibrant energy of Duluth all the way up to the wild beauty of Grand Portage. The drive itself was an epic journey, with every turn revealing more stunning scenery. We even made a special detour to the Border Store and ventured along the famous Gunflint Trail, soaking in the unique atmosphere and feeling like true explorers.
The state parks along the North Shore are seriously something else. Grand Portage State Park blew us away with its raw, untamed beauty – you can practically feel the history and the immense power of nature there. Tettegouche State Park offered breathtaking views and incredible hiking opportunities; it’s the kind of place where you can truly connect with the outdoors and feel your energy levels soar. And Split Rock Lighthouse? Talk about an iconic spot! Standing there, looking out at the vastness of Lake Superior, you get a real sense of adventure and the sheer scale of this land. Gooseberry Falls was another highlight, with its cascading waterfalls creating a soundtrack to our explorations. Every park felt like a new chapter in our Minnesota story, filled with discovery and pure joy.
While we didn't get to spot any moose or wolves on this trip, that just gives us the perfect excuse to plan a return! Imagining the North Shore blanketed in snow and hitting the slopes at our ski lodge base sounds like an epic winter adventure waiting to happen. Betty's Pies was a delicious pit stop that added to the charm of our journey, and the whole experience was just so refreshing. It's a place that encourages you to dream big, embrace the outdoors, and create memories that truly glow. This Minnesota adventure was a reminder that the best experiences are often found off the beaten path, surrounded by nature and good company.
