Paranal and La Silla - transport options
Our take
If you're looking to explore the stunning observatories of Paranal and La Silla in Chile, transportation options can be a bit tricky since public transport is not available. While driving solo might feel daunting, consider reaching out to local agencies or cab companies that cater to tourists. Recommendations often lean towards Paranal for its breathtaking views and advanced facilities, but La Silla also has its charm. For other observatories, Mamalluca, Pangue, and Cerro Tololo near Vicuña are popular alternatives worth exploring. Happy stargazing!
Are there any agencies or cab companies which offer transportation to and from La Silla or Paranal? While I do drive in the UK am reluctant to drive solo in Chile, and the ESO site mentions there is no public transport.
Also from these 2 observatories, is there one which people recommend more over the other? I note ALMA is no longer accepting tourists.
Other observatories I can see seem to be more around Vicuna than San Pedro ( Mamalluca, Pangue, Cerro Tololo).
Thanks for any input and recommendations!
