Our Take: Prairie Roads & Epic Views: A South Dakota Spring Escape

This Spring Break, a spontaneous road trip took one of our community members from Kansas City all the way to South Dakota, proving that epic adventures can be found just a drive away! The journey itself was a highlight, with a gorgeous drive through Northwest Nebraska that felt like stepping into a vast, open canvas. Imagine cruising for hours, the only car on the road, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the prairie stretching out endlessly. It’s that feeling of freedom and discovery, of being a main character on your own adventure, that makes road trips so special. This explorer embraced the quiet solitude and the sheer scale of the landscape, finding joy in the simple, yet profound, experience of the open road.

Rapid City served as the perfect home base for exploring the wonders of South Dakota. From vibrant Japanese to flavorful Nepali cuisine, the culinary scene offered a delightful surprise, proving that even off-the-beaten-path destinations can offer diverse and delicious experiences. But the real magic unfolded in the natural and historical marvels that dot the landscape. Custer State Park, with its stunning vistas, and the iconic Black Hills, home to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, offered a glimpse into both natural grandeur and human ambition. Venturing into Wind Cave and the Badlands National Park revealed the raw, untamed beauty of the earth, each turn a new discovery waiting to happen.

Even a quick stop at Wall Drug added to the unique charm of the trip, a testament to the quirky and memorable roadside attractions that make American travel so engaging. While the long stretches of I-90 and I-29 might seem like just a way to get from point A to point B, our traveler discovered the secret: a virtually speed-trap-free zone at night, perfect for soaking in the miles and the anticipation of what lies ahead. This South Dakota escape is a shining example of how embracing the journey, with all its unexpected turns and vast horizons, can lead to an unforgettable adventure. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most epic views are found on the road less traveled, especially when you bring your whole squad of curiosity and positivity along for the ride.

From travel

Did a lil Spring Break trip to South Dakota from KC this week. Gorgeous drive through NW Nebraska. Was basically the only car on the road for hours at a time driving through the beautiful (and vast) prairie. Stayed in Rapid City and enjoyed some lovely Japanese and Nepali food.
