Question about Vietnam itinerary (10 days)

Our take

Hey there, fellow adventurer! Your 9-day itinerary through Vietnam is bursting with excitement and rich experiences! Starting in Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll dive into the vibrant culture before exploring the serene Mekong Delta. The overnight train to Da Nang sounds epic, leading you to the charming Hoi An and historical Hue. Phong Nha’s stunning caves are a must-see, and Ninh Binh offers breathtaking landscapes.

When it comes to planning a vibrant adventure through Vietnam, the proposed itinerary from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi showcases a mix of bustling cities, serene countryside, and rich cultural experiences. As shared by a fellow traveler on Reddit, the route includes stops at the Mekong Delta, Hoi An, Hue, Phong Nha, and Ninh Binh, with an overnight train to Da Nang in between. This skeleton plan captures the essence of what makes Vietnam a dream destination: a beautiful blend of urban excitement and natural wonder. For those considering their own trips, this itinerary resonates with earlier discussions about travel planning, such as the insights found in articles like Is this Vietnam + Cambodia itinerary good? and Vietnam itinerary.

One of the standout elements of this itinerary is the inclusion of the Mekong Delta. This region is not only a feast for the eyes with its lush landscapes but also offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle, making it a perfect introduction to Vietnam's diverse culture. However, the traveler should consider how much time they allocate to each destination. Given that they will only have about nine days, it might be worth examining the feasibility of squeezing in so many locations without feeling rushed. For example, if time is tight, some might argue that skipping Hue could be an option in favor of more time in the enchanting Hoi An, known for its lantern-lit streets and culinary delights.

Another consideration is the overnight train journey to Da Nang. While train travel adds a unique charm and adventure to the trip, it's essential to remember that the experience can be quite different from flying or driving. The overnight train can be a fantastic way to meet fellow travelers and locals, but it does require a bit of planning. Ensuring that you have the right snacks, entertainment, and comfort items will help to make the journey more enjoyable. Plus, waking up to the stunning landscapes of Vietnam while on the train is an experience that can’t be replicated.

Lastly, the inclusion of Ninh Binh is a brilliant move, as it allows the traveler to explore the stunning karst landscapes and serene waterways that are often overshadowed by more popular destinations. The opportunity for a boat ride through the rice paddies and limestone cliffs of Tam Coc is not to be missed! However, it’s crucial to balance this with time for relaxation and spontaneity. Travel isn't just about ticking off boxes; it’s about embracing the moments that unfold along the way. This is particularly pertinent for a trip through Vietnam, where every turn can lead to an unexpected adventure or encounter.

As travelers finalize their itineraries, they should think about the experiences they want to prioritize and how they want to feel during their journey. Will they embrace the hustle and bustle of city life, or will they seek the tranquility of nature? Whatever the choice, it's clear that Vietnam's diverse offerings promise an unforgettable adventure. As we look ahead, one question lingers: how will the changing travel landscape influence our adventures in this captivating country? The answer may shape our future journeys and the stories we’ll bring back home.

I have around 9 days to explore Vietnam, starting from the 30th of April (arrival at 9 PM) to the 9th of May (departure 9 AM).

The skeleton for my itinerary looks like this:

Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong Delta → Ho Chi Minh City → Overnight Train to Da Nang → Hoi An → Hue → Phong Nha → Ninh Binh → Hanoi

Hanoi will serve as my departure city so I won't really be spending time there.

Anything you would swap out, flat out remove or add?

Thank u!
