Squishy Bag Strategy: Can It Still Count as Carry-On?

Hey everyone!

This is such a classic travel puzzle, and honestly, it's one we've all probably pondered while staring down a slightly-too-full suitcase! The "squishy bag strategy" for carry-on is totally relatable. You’ve got that perfect bag that *could* work, but it's currently embracing its full potential, making it a bit of a tight squeeze for those strict airline sizers. The question is, can a little strategic squishing be your ticket to carry-on glory? We're here to break down this whole adventure!

When it comes to carry-on dimensions, airlines are usually pretty clear. They want your bag to fit within a specific set of measurements – length, width, and depth. The key here is that the bag, in its *intended* and *packed* state, needs to meet those requirements. While it’s awesome that your bag has the flexibility to compress, the real test often comes when it's filled with all your travel essentials. Airlines want to be sure that even if your bag *can* squish, it won't be bulging or bending in a way that exceeds their limits once you've packed it for your epic journey. Think of it like this: if you can easily push it into the sizer and it fits snugly, you’re probably in good shape! But if it’s forcing its way in, or if the sides are bowing out, that’s where you might run into a little turbulence.

Our take is that flexibility is fantastic, but it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan or to pack smart from the get-go. If your bag is consistently pushing the boundaries, even when "squished," it might be worth considering a slightly smaller option for those specific airlines. Sometimes, it’s not just about *if* it can squish, but *how much* and *if that squish is still within the rules*. We love that adventurous spirit of trying to make it work, and with a little foresight, you can definitely navigate this! Aim to pack efficiently, utilize packing cubes to keep things organized and compressed, and always give your bag a quick test run in a sizer before you head to the airport. That way, you can focus on the excitement of your trip, not the stress of your luggage!

From travel

We are flying Lufthansa, Air Canada and my bag is a bit fat (sticks out), but if I don’t fill it to the brim, it would squish.

Is that sufficient for it to qualify for carry on dimensions? If it can easily squish down and fit into the little measuring cage?
