Thoughts on my itinerary for my first time on South Island in New Zealand?
Our take
Hello all!
I’m finalizing an 11-day South Island road trip for mid-April and would love some feedback on the pacing and logistics. For reference, group is 3 55+ adults, 2 20s. We decided to take it a bit easier and set up 3 home bases (Queenstown, Wanaka, Twizel) from which we’ll do short day trips and to minimize moving around.
\*\*Base 1: Queenstown (Days 1-4)\*\*
\- Day 1: Land mid-morning. Drop bags at Airbnb, explore the CBD, walk the Queenstown Gardens, and visit Kiwi Park. Take it easy. Maybe Time Tripper?
\- Day 2: Relaxed morning, noon pickup for the Skippers Canyon Jet boat, in evening, head up the Skyline Gondola for luge and Stratosfare dinner.
\- Day 3: Altitude Tours full Milford sound tour (we were originally going to drive to Te Anau, stay a night, then do Milford Sound ourselves, but decided to not drive).
\- Day 4: Pick up the rental car in the morning, head to Glenorchy, hike the Bob's Cove Track on the way, Mrs. Woolly’s General Store. Head back to Queenstown and do the evening TSS Earnslaw/Walter Peak Cruise/BBQ.
\*Base 2: Wānaka (Days 5-7)\*
\- Day 5: Leave Queenstown. Check out Arrowtown/Chinese Settlement, drive Crown Range Road, check out Cardrona Hotel, check into Airbnb in Wanaka.
\- Day 6: Day trip to Blue Pools track, small hike, return to relax by Lake Wānaka.
\- Day 7: Buffer day, not exactly sure what to do - Wānaka Lavender Farm or lake cruise to Mou Waho or Ruby Island?
\*\*Base 3: Twizel (Days 8-11)\*\*
\- Day 8: Drive to Twizel, stop by clay cliffs, check into Airbnb.
\- Day 9: Morning drive into Aoraki/Mt Cook Village, Hermitage Glacier Explorers, walk the open portions of the Hooker Valley Track, then chill in the cafe of the hotel for a bit for pictures.
\- Day 10: Day trip to Lake Tekapo, check out the lake, Church of the Good Shepherd, then go to Tekapo Springs, Dark Sky Project Summit for stargazing at night.
\- Day 11: Another buffer day, any ideas what to do in Twizel or the surrounding areas? I know there’s a salmon farm, is that worth it?
\- Day 12: Drive from Twizel back to Queenstown, drop off rental car, dip.
How does this itinerary look in terms of pacing and coverage? Anything we’re missing? I don’t think we’ll drive to the west coast - extent of our glacier exploration will be the Hermitage tour.
Also, besides the obvious food choices (Fergs in Queenstown), anything I should check out in Queenstown, Wanaka, Twizel, or Tekapo during our day trip?
Last thing - haven’t booked my rental car yet (lol), any recommendations for companies? Just need a van to fit 5 people and some luggage.
Thanks again!

- NZ travel plan & how best to do Mount CookHi! I’m planning a trip to New Zealand in mid-May for about 2 weeks, and would like some feedback on my itinerary, as well as advice on the best way to visit Mt Cook. I’m a solo female traveler and not renting a car. Current Itinerary: Land in Auckland from the US, will stay for 2 nights (including Waiheke day trip) Fly to Queenstown Stay in Queenstown for probably 2 nights, I’m interested in visiting nearby places like Arrowtown and Glenorchy Travel north to Mt Cook / Tekapo Join a South Island group tour starting in Tekapo, going to: Queenstown again Milford Sound Wanaka Franz Josef Glacier Christchurch 2 nights in Christchurch, possible day trip to Akorua or Waipara Valley Fly back up to Auckland for 1 night before flying home Is there anything I am overlooking? Is there anything weather related I should be aware of? I also would like some help regarding Mount Cook. It looks incredible and I’m really excited to go, but I’m struggling with logistics without a car. I’ve come up with 3 options: Option 1: Stay overnight in Mt Cook Village Bus from Queenstown to Mt Cook ($200NZD, only 1 per day) Stay 1 or 2 nights (hotels here will be the most expensive option) Have time to do the glacier boat tour Bus from Mt Cook to Tekapo to meet my tour ($200NZD, only 1 per day) Thoughts: This seems like the ideal experience, but I am not sure how easy it will be to get around the park without a car More importantly, I want to make sure I will be able to enjoy the nature safely. I am comfortable with solo nature walks, but I am not comfortable scaling a mountain by myself. Will I feel limited there? This is the most expensive option, but I am ok with that if it is the best experience Option 2: Base in Tekapo + day trip to Mt Cook Bus Queenstown to Tekapo (~$76-96NZD) Shuttle tour from Tekapo to Mt Cook ($150NZD) the next day Thoughts: Only 5 or so hours in the park, not sure that is enough Less immersive than staying overnight This would give more time in the park than the intercity bus, which is only once a day each way and costs more Option 3: Guided transfer/tour from Queenstown to Tekapo, stopping in Mt Cook Full-day guided tour for $380 NZD Includes many stops that look great on the way, then Mt Cook for about 3 hours, ends in Tekapo Thoughts: The easiest option logistically, but least time at Mt Cook Could in theory go back to Mt Cook the next day with the shuttle, but that is a ton of unnecessary travel With all that said, I essentially am trying to figure out- Is staying overnight in Mt Cook Village worth the extra cost/logistics instead of just doing a day trip? Would ~3–5 hours in Mt Cook feel too rushed? For a solo traveler in May, is Mt Cook Village easy enough to navigate without a car, or does it feel limiting? And will enjoying the nature feel safe solo? Thank you in advance! I appreciate all advice, especially from people who’ve done this without driving! submitted by /u/Next_Version4305 [link] [comments]
- NZ trip planHello all - I’m travelling to New Zealand from the US for the first time. I’ll be there from Sunday May 24 - Sun May 31. I want to make the most of my time but also take it easy - I’m a relaxed traveller who doesn’t want to spend every minute doing some activity. I am Muslim so I have dietary restrictions (halal only). May 27 happens to be the biggest Muslim holiday which I’m planning to spend in Auckland. Would love your feedback on my itinerary below. Am I doing too much? Am I missing out on something? Day 1 - May 24 - Arrive in Auckland and explore the city Day 2 - May 25 - Ferry to Waiheke Island. Spend the day here and back to Auckland in the evening Day 3 - May 26 - Rent car to go to Rotura. Checkout Champagne pool, Geysers, Redwoods forest walk. It says it’s a 3 hour drive each way so I’ll be driving 6 hours. Not sure if it’s worth it or I should take a flight. Day 4 - May 27 - Celebrate Eid in Auckland, leave for Queenstown Day 5 - May 28 - Milford sound. I’m thinking I’ll take the guided tour, avoids driving for a long time. Is this a good idea? I also plan to do the Milford sound cruise. Back to Queenstown Day 6 - May 29 - Queenstown + Arrow town. Skyline Gondola, lake wakatipu, onsen hot pools. Will rent a car here. Stay in Queenstown. Day 7 - May 30 - Drive to Mount Cook. Stay in Twizel… is this worth it? I’m not sure I’d wanna spend hours hiking here. Day 8 - May 31 - leave early morning and drive to Tekapo then to Christchurch. Drop off car at the airport. Leave Christchurch. Is it worth spending a night in Christchurch? submitted by /u/No-Instance-48 [link] [comments]
