Tokyo family itinerary check (3 kids, food focus and key landmarks)

Our take

Hey everyone! We’re gearing up for an exciting 15-day adventure in Japan at the end of June, starting with a week in Tokyo. Our itinerary focuses on family-friendly key landmarks and delicious food experiences, perfect for our three kids (ages 6, 8, and 11). We want to ensure a balanced pace while exploring iconic spots and trying local cuisine. I’d love your insights on our plan and any recommendations for kid-friendly restaurants or activities.

Hi all,

We’re heading to Japan for 15 days at the end of June. I’ve planned out the Tokyo part of the trip (7 days). I used leapaways.com as a starting point for structuring the week and I’m pretty happy with the overall flow, but I’d really value feedback from people who know Tokyo and get some tips for local spots (food in particular).

We’ll be traveling with our 3 kids (6, 8 and 11 years old), so the goal is to cover the key landmarks, but keep the pace family-friendly so they enjoy the trip. We want a strong food focus. We are food lovers and our kids are always happy to test new food (we travelled several times in Asia with them and they always enjoyed the food).

Here’s the current plan:

Day 1: Asakusa / Senso-ji / Nakamise Street / Tempura in Asakusa / Tokyo Skytree

Day 2: Ueno Park / Ameyoko / Tokyo National Museum / Tonkatsu / Akihabara for arcades, anime, Pokemon

Day 3: Meiji Jingu / Harajuku / Omotesando / Gyoza at Harajuku Gyozaro / Shibuya in the evening

Day 4: Kamakura day trip / Great Buddha / Hase-dera / Komachi Street / Shirasu or soba

Day 5: Tsukiji Outer Market / TeamLab Planets / Odaiba / Monjayaki or seafood

Day 5: Yokohama day trip / Minato Mirai / Cup Noodles Museum / Chinatown lunch

Day 7: Ghibli Museum if we can get tickets / Kichijoji + Inokashira Park

What I’d love feedback on:

- Whether this feels well balanced for Tokyo with kids. Any days that look too ambitious or not ambitious enough?

- Better swaps for any of the major stops. And for day trips out of the city, are Kamakura and Yokohama the right 2 day trips with kids?

- Traditional / local restaurant recommendations. Any good food stops that also work well with kids?

After Tokyo we’ll be spending 7 days in Kansai, and I’m still unsure whether Osaka or Kyoto makes the better base, so I’d also love opinions on that.

Thanks a lot for any advice and tips.
