Unexpected Customs Experience in Mexico

Our take

Traveling with electronics can add a layer of excitement to your adventures, but it can also bring unexpected challenges. My trip to Mexico highlighted the importance of understanding customs regulations, especially when packing valuable devices like my Meta 3 VR headset. What I thought would be a smooth journey turned into a lesson on customs duties and declaration requirements.

Traveling with Electronics: What I Learned

Traveling internationally often means packing our favorite electronic devices without much thought. This year, however, I experienced an unexpected challenge when heading to Mexico—customs restrictions.

Customs Surprises at the Airport

I anticipated the usual routine: a few questions and a quick inspection. Instead, I discovered that Mexico's rules regarding what visitors can bring—and what must be declared or is subject to duties—were stricter than I had realized. This situation served as an important reminder to always review a country’s customs guidance before packing, especially when bringing valuable items.

Bringing a VR Headset: Excitement and Complications

I was eager to bring my Meta 3 VR headset on the flight, and it turned out to be an incredible experience. Watching movies in full screen, free from outside distractions, made the flight enjoyable, and the battery lasted throughout the journey. It was a game-changer for travel.

However, upon arrival at the Mexican airport, my bag was searched by customs officials. They found the VR headset and asked several questions: what it was for, its value, and the exact model. The officers conducted their own research to confirm the headset's worth. Unfortunately, the VR headset was not on Mexico's exclusion list for electronic devices, meaning I had to pay duties—even though I planned to bring it back to Canada after my vacation. I was charged 984 pesos, which is approximately $78 Canadian.
