Vietnam or Indonesia for a 3-week solo trip in mid-June from Toronto?
Our take
Hey everyone, I’m trying to choose between Vietnam and Indonesia for a 3-week solo trip, likely flying from Toronto around June 15, and I’d love some advice from people who’ve done either (or both).
What I’m looking for:
- easy to meet people / good hostel social scene
- great food
- lots to do
- a mix of nature, culture, cities, and some adventure
- not just a pure beach trip, but I do want some relaxing / scenic time too
The two rough routes I’m considering are:
Vietnam:
Hanoi → Ha Giang Loop → Ninh Binh → Phong Nha → Hue → Hoi An/Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City
Indonesia:
Ubud → Canggu → Gili T → Uluwatu → Yogyakarta → Bromo
My main concerns are:
- weather in mid/late June
- which one is better for a solo traveler
- which one has the better balance of social scene + food + activities
- whether Vietnam in June is still worth it, or whether Indonesia is the smarter move
From what I’ve read so far, Vietnam seems like the more intense / varied / food-heavy trip, while Indonesia seems like the easier weather choice and maybe a bit more relaxed.
For people who’ve done one or both:
- Which would you choose for 3 weeks solo in mid-June?
- Is Vietnam in June actually fine, or does the weather make it noticeably worse?
- Does Indonesia feel too Bali-heavy / beachy compared to Vietnam, or is that unfair?
- Which trip would you personally be more excited to do?
Would really appreciate honest opinions, especially if you’ve traveled there solo around that time of year. Thanks!

- First time in Vietnam: stay in North Vietnam solo or fly to Bangkok (again) for the last 5–6 days?Hey everyone, I’ll be traveling to Vietnam for the first time from 30 May to 26 June. I’m starting in Ho Chi Minh City and ending in Hanoi because of flight availability. I’ll be traveling with friends from 30 May to 20 June, and after that I’m planning to spend 5–6 days solo for the first time in my life. I’ve never solo traveled before, so I’m trying to decide what to do with that final part of the trip. Right now, I’m considering two options: 1. Stay in northern Vietnam for another 5–6 days I’ll already have spent around 6 days in the Hanoi area with my friends, so I’m not sure if there will still be enough for me to do alone. 2. Fly to Bangkok on 20 June and stay there until my flight home on 26 June I’ve been to Thailand several times and really love it there, especially the food, massages, and general atmosphere. The downside is that it would obviously make the trip more expensive because of the extra flight and slightly higher hotel/living costs. I’ve also thought about Chiang Mai or Krabi again, but with only a few days and needing to fly home from Bangkok anyway, I don’t think that would be worth the extra travel. For context, I’ve already been to Phuket, some Thai islands, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. My main question is: Is there enough to do in northern Vietnam for that long, or would it make more sense to spend the last 5 days in Bangkok since I already know I love it there? For my solo travel time, I’m mostly looking for: • nice scenery • street food and night markets • massages/spas • good food • relaxing activities • time alone with my thoughts • maybe 1–2 small tours • possibly playing pool or having a few beers with strangers • maybe getting a tattoo, like I did in Bangkok last year since they are way cheaper than in Europe I’m not really a big party or tourist-attraction type of person. For example, even though I really liked Bangkok, I wouldn’t be interested in places like Khao San Road. I guess I’m wondering whether it’s worth spending the extra money to fly to Bangkok for a few days just to get that Thailand feeling at the end of the trip, especially since I love Thai food and mango sticky rice so much. On the other hand, I don’t want to leave Vietnam too early if northern Vietnam would still be interesting and enjoyable solo. A few extra questions: • Do you have any general recommendations for things I could do solo in northern Vietnam or the Bangkok area? • Is it possible to find Thai food in Vietnam, especially things like pad kra pao and mango sticky rice? • Does Vietnam have anything comparable to Thailand’s 7-Eleven availability/convenience store culture, or is that much more of a Thailand thing? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have spent time solo in northern Vietnam or done a similar Vietnam/Thailand split. submitted by /u/Intern1037 [link] [comments]
- Backpacking Southeast Asia July & August (6weeks)Hey :) I have six weeks to spend in July & August. I would like to surf, chill at the beach, do self care (spa), maybe do my diving license, and some hiking/nature stuff. But I’d also like to have a social environment where I can go to hostels to meet people (because I am travelling solo). I have already been in east-Malaysia, Lombok, Bali, Java, Flores and I wanna explore something new. Because it’s my only time off throughout the year good weather is quite important to me, which made me think Indonesia is the only appropriate place for me to go to but I’ve exhausted my indonesia options I feel like. I am so confused. Central vietnam would have been a good place but it’s less of a beach-vibe I think. What would be a good place to go to? What do yall advise me? - 2 week Vietnam Itinerary critique/ adviceI’m planning a solo travel Vietnam trip and I’ve tried to build an itinerary that focuses on nature + culture + history + meaningful experiences (not just tourist checklist stuff). Current plan: - Hanoi (2 days, including Hoa Lo Prison) - Ha Giang Loop (3–4 days) - Ninh Binh (2 days) - Fly to Central Vietnam → Hue (2 days) + Hoi An (3 days) - Ho Chi Minh City (2–3 days for war history — War Remnants Museum + Cu Chi Tunnels) A few honest questions: Bay question (very confused): Is it actually worth adding Ha Long Bay / Lan Ha Bay if I’m already doing Ha Giang? I’m not into swimming and I’m worried it might feel slow / touristy. Should I skip completely, do 1 night (Lan Ha?), or is it a must regardless? Sapa vs Ha Giang: I’m currently planning Ha Giang, is there ANY reason to also include Sapa? Heard it has become touristy now. Pacing: Does this plan feel too rushed or actually well-balanced? War history: Are the War Remnants Museum + Cu Chi enough, or is there anything else truly worth adding for history? Anything I’m missing that is genuinely special (not just popular)? I have the possibility to extend the trip for few days. Would really appreciate advices. I am so excited for this trip 🥹🥹 submitted by /u/Key-Ad2972 [link] [comments]
