First Solo Travel to Thailand 4-5 weeks
Our take
I’m planning a 4 -5 weeks trip to Thailand. Already have my first 5 nights booked at a hostel in Bangkok to experience the Songkran fest, and I'll be checking out on April 16th
After that, I’m hoping to hit both the North and the South before crossing over to Cambodia. I want a good mix of partying, diving/beaches, and chilling, but I’m trying to avoid complete travel burnout and wrong plan
Here is my very amatuer solo travel plan. Would love to hear your thoughts, especially on the transit. I can make any changes after Bangkok
• Bangkok (5 nights) Checking out April 16th.
• Bangkok ➔ Chiang Mai (Flight or Night Train) should I book now?
• Chiang Mai (4 nights)
• Chiang Mai ➔ Pai (Minivan)
• Pai (3 nights)

• Krabi / Ao Nang (3 nights)

• Phi Phi (3 nights)
• Phi Phi ➔ Khao Sok (Ferry + Minivan)
• Khao Sok (2 nights)
• Khao Sok ➔ Surat Thani ➔ Koh Tao (Joint Ticket Minivan + Ferry)

- First time in Vietnam: stay in North Vietnam solo or fly to Bangkok (again) for the last 5–6 days?Hey everyone, I’ll be traveling to Vietnam for the first time from 30 May to 26 June. I’m starting in Ho Chi Minh City and ending in Hanoi because of flight availability. I’ll be traveling with friends from 30 May to 20 June, and after that I’m planning to spend 5–6 days solo for the first time in my life. I’ve never solo traveled before, so I’m trying to decide what to do with that final part of the trip. Right now, I’m considering two options: 1. Stay in northern Vietnam for another 5–6 days I’ll already have spent around 6 days in the Hanoi area with my friends, so I’m not sure if there will still be enough for me to do alone. 2. Fly to Bangkok on 20 June and stay there until my flight home on 26 June I’ve been to Thailand several times and really love it there, especially the food, massages, and general atmosphere. The downside is that it would obviously make the trip more expensive because of the extra flight and slightly higher hotel/living costs. I’ve also thought about Chiang Mai or Krabi again, but with only a few days and needing to fly home from Bangkok anyway, I don’t think that would be worth the extra travel. For context, I’ve already been to Phuket, some Thai islands, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. My main question is: Is there enough to do in northern Vietnam for that long, or would it make more sense to spend the last 5 days in Bangkok since I already know I love it there? For my solo travel time, I’m mostly looking for: • nice scenery • street food and night markets • massages/spas • good food • relaxing activities • time alone with my thoughts • maybe 1–2 small tours • possibly playing pool or having a few beers with strangers • maybe getting a tattoo, like I did in Bangkok last year since they are way cheaper than in Europe I’m not really a big party or tourist-attraction type of person. For example, even though I really liked Bangkok, I wouldn’t be interested in places like Khao San Road. I guess I’m wondering whether it’s worth spending the extra money to fly to Bangkok for a few days just to get that Thailand feeling at the end of the trip, especially since I love Thai food and mango sticky rice so much. On the other hand, I don’t want to leave Vietnam too early if northern Vietnam would still be interesting and enjoyable solo. A few extra questions: • Do you have any general recommendations for things I could do solo in northern Vietnam or the Bangkok area? • Is it possible to find Thai food in Vietnam, especially things like pad kra pao and mango sticky rice? • Does Vietnam have anything comparable to Thailand’s 7-Eleven availability/convenience store culture, or is that much more of a Thailand thing? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have spent time solo in northern Vietnam or done a similar Vietnam/Thailand split. submitted by /u/Intern1037 [link] [comments]
- Travelling SE Asia solo as a woman - advice on packing and route?I am travelling SE Asia for 6 weeks, leaving in two weeks. I will however likely extend this trip and will probably be 2-3 months total. It would be great to get some advice on my packing list and route (both below). I have no idea what I'm doing but have just done some research around where I am likely to find DNB (absolute dnb nerd, happy to spend my life chasing it around the world hahaha) and where will be good for getting in some partying but also chilling, not too fussed to do anything crazy in terms of hikes/ activities. All I've booked is my flight to Bangkok and return from Bali back to the UK, and the first two nights hostels in Bangkok. Re. packing list - I don't mind slightly overpacking clothes but I also do wanna do some shopping out there. I have a 120L Backpack. 2x weeks Bali, 2x weeks Veitnam, 2x weeks Thailand, planning 2-4 days in each place. I am aware my plans will probably change if I meet people and want to go with them/ want to stay in places longer. Also open to suggestions of where else I should go if I extend! Route: Thailand- Bangkok -> Patong Beach -> Koh Samui -> Koh Pangan -> Koh Tao -> Back to Bangkok night before flight (I know it's a little rogue to go from Bangkok to Phuket and then the rest of my Thailand route but I have some friends there who are leaving Thailand a few days after I get there that I wanna catch for a few days) Veitnam- Hanoi ->Ha Long Bay (day trip) -> Da Nang -> Hoi An ->Ho Chi Minh Bali- Canggu -> Uluwatu -> Nusa Pendia -> Ubud - Gilli T Packing List: - Headphones - Earbuds - Portable charger - Passport (duh) - Chargers and local plugs - Microfibre Towel - Essential Toiletries (Moisturiser, Sunscreen, Hair Gel) - 3 going out tops - 3 casual tops - 1x Denim Shorts - 2x skirts (1 denim 1 comfy) - 1x Trousers - 5x Bikinis (I know probably overkill, don't mind) - 2x gym sets (I'll do a lot of running and pilates/ yoga) - 1x beach cover up set - 1x Dress - 1x Thermal Long Sleeve - Makeup (basics) - Teva sandals - Salomon trainers - Flip Flops - 10x Underwear - 3x socks - 1x fold up water proof jacket (folds up small) - sunglasses - tote bag for beach - Uniqlo cross body bag - Sleep mask - Padlock submitted by /u/Revolutionary_Bug795 [link] [comments]
- Need help planning my gap year!Hello travelers, I am currently a senior in high school hoping to travel for a year before starting college, and I am looking for help planning my trip - and looking for any general tips. Here is my vague layout: New Zealand from early September to late December (~4 months) Thailand + some travel around SEA from early January to late Feb/early Mar. (~2 months) Japan from after Thailand to end of April. (~2 months) China early May to end of June (~2 months) Then see if I want to stay home until school starts in August or travel again. The thought process behind this schedule is based on weather, and increasing difficulty. Starting in NZ where I already speak the language and will get my bearings for solo traveling, and do some seasonal work. Then SEA where there is an established hostel/backpacking culture where I hope to practice Muay Thai. Then Japan where I have visited before (but this time going to more rural areas and using workaway and practicing my shitty Japanese), then to China where I imagine will be the most difficult to backpack in - I want to sightsee in May before it gets super touristy, then do a month or so in a Shaolin temple in June (hopefully more northern so it won’t be too hot either). Please correct me if I have any false assumptions, or if you have any feedback. Thanks! submitted by /u/basilllI [link] [comments]
- Is this a realistic travel plan?Hi all, I’m planning on leaving my job early next year and taking 9-12 months off to go travelling through south east Asia, leaving around Feb/March time) I’m just in the process of making some initial planning, obviously it’s quite far away and this is by no means a finished itinerary. I’ve just written a draft based on places I’ve been recommended by friends and things I’ve seen online. I’m fully expecting everything to change, but is what I’ve got down already below somewhat realistic in terms of logistics, timings, cost, etc? I really have no idea what I’m doing so any advice is very much welcome haha. Fly from London to Bangkok - 1 week Head into North Thailand (Chang Mai, Pai Chang Rai) - 5 weeks Cross over into Laos (Luang Prabang, VanVieng) - 2 weeks Down into Vietnam (Ho Chi Min, Hanoi, Hoi an, Ha Giang Loop) - 4 weeks Fly over to Sri Lanka (Sigiriya, Kandy, Hortain plains, Ella, Colombo) - 5 weeks Fly back to South Thailand (Phuket, Koh Samui, Phi Phi islands, Khao Sok, Krabi) - 5 weeks Over to Malaysia (Kuala lumpa, Tasman national park) - 2/3 weeks Then Indonesia (Jakarta, Bali, Java) - 4 weeks Fly over to the Philippines (Manila, Palawan (Coron + Elnido), Cebu) - 3 weeks Over to Australia and working my way up the east coast (Melbourne, Sydney, Byron bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Noosaville, Rainbow beach, Kgari, Whitsundays, Edmondson) - 8 weeks Then to southern New Zealand (Invercargill, Stewart island, Caroline Peak, Te Anau, Queenstown, Wanaka, Mount cook, Twizel, Lake Tekapo, Christchurch, Blenheim, Wellington, Taupo, Coromandel, Whangarei, Auckland) - 8 weeks Fly back to London from north New Zealand Of course I’m perfectly happy to just play things by ear when I’m out there and mix things up as I go along, but I just want to have a basic plan ready. Also how much roughly would a trip like this be expected to cost? I’m thinking close to £20k but I have no clue really what to expect. Cheers! submitted by /u/WaffleOfWar70 [link] [comments]
