I’m a total P-personality, which basically means I don’t look up anything until I’m already on the plane. Budapest was such a vibe though! We started at New York Café right after landing at 6AM. The coffee was just... meh (which is what we expected). You’re basically paying an "entrance fee" just to see the fancy ceiling and take photos. We got in without a queue because it was early, so that was a win. Spent some time at the Central Market and Vaci St. I found a shop called Citygraph Art & Souvenir and bought a purple canvas bag there and literally ended up carrying it for the rest of my trip in Spain too. Their illustrated magnets are also way cuter than the generic ones. For food, we tried Monk’s Bistrot because of the reviews (I believe it's 4.6 or something on Google Map?), but idk... the chicken tasted like salty ham to me? The service was nice, but the flavor was just not my type . I had better luck at Mantra Specialty Coffee after failing to get into the Zoo Cafe (they don't do walk-ins, big failure for a P person like me). Mantra is so cozy and warm, definitely recommend it for a quiet break. Second day was better for food—Arán Bakery is a MUST. Their Cruffins are insane. We got lucky at 11AM and missed the line, but it got huge right after we sat down. Of course, did the classic Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. It was SO WINDY up there but the views were insane. We didn't bother going inside Buda Castle, but we found this amazing photo spot called S. MARIA MATER DEI overlooking the Chain Bridge. Also, a tip for the Parliament: if you’re lazy like us and didn't book online, go there in the morning to snag a physical ticket for the afternoon (not guaranteed though we were lucky to secure some afternoon slots). It's worth it for the Holy Crown alone, even if you can't take photos of it. We ended with the Legenda City Cruise (Dock 7). Be sure to grab a glass of champagne, head to the top deck, and wait until you get near the Parliament at night. Then we hit up Szimpla Kert ruin bar on Friday night—it was a total maze! Crowds everywhere, but you have to experience it at least once. Anyway, Budapest really surprised me. - A week of slow travel in BudapestI just spent a week in Budapest doing some slow travel. I am self-employed/startup founder and live in London so figured I’d take it slow in Europe. Honestly…I hated it my first 2 days. My Airbnb courtyard was absolutely run down and I was terrified as a solo female traveler. It was gorgeous during the day though (last pic). The energy in the city still felt a bit cold, I’m also Indian and I’m not sure if that contributed? Again, I could be totally wrong so sorry if that’s wrong! Things did a 360 for me when it got sunny out. People had completely different energy, just saw people having a sober cig at outdoor coffee shops so that was lovely. I did very normal touristy things on this trip so don’t have any unique recommendations. My best moments were at: Tóth Árpád stny (next to Fisherman’s bastion): Although it was right next to an extremely popular tourist spot, I didn’t see many. It was mostly just locals. Organ concert at St. Stephen’s Basilica: Don’t know if this is widely popular but I just happened to see the sign for it that morning and they had tickets available to popped in Akadémia u. - Long time European traveler-New trip/New observationsMy wife and I've been visiting Europe almost annually for the last 25 years. There have been huge changes in those 25 years, with almost all of them being positive. We just got back from 10 days in Hungary/Austria, and here are a few things I picked up. For the first time ever, I didn't go to an ATM and get local currency. I used Google Pay every single place in Hungary. I had 80€ left over from a previous trip to spend in Austria, which I spent about 15 for a place that didn't accept cards for under 20. Budapest was my favorite place on the trip. Great food, great sites, friendly people, great hotel, great transportation, etc. One place we ate at added a 15% service fee, which annoyed me but as I get older I tend to let these things bother me less and less. There was also a couple of places who had the hand helds set up to default to high tip %'s. I just took my time and found the no tip option. If they had a 5% tip option, I would do that. Vienna-I don't think I've seen bigger crowds anywhere in Europe than a Saturday in Vienna. It probably didn't help that there were 50k people in a marathon the next day. I would never recommend going to Vienna on a Saturday. I was also stunned by the number of people smoking in Vienna. Over the years I've seen the move to vaping, and I'm not bothered at all by smoking, but it just surprised me how many people were smoking in Austria. Hofburg area was gorgeous. Since Vienna is closed on Sunday's, we made a day trip to Bratislava. Perfect place for a day trip. Fandom girls from a certain country under 25-I hate to stereotype, but this group of girls have to be the worst on the planet when it comes to travel. We went on an hour boat ride, and 59 minutes involved them posing. Everywhere we went, they were influencing or whatever it is called (I know, I'm old). Every place has annoying travelers, but this group takes it to another level. Salzburg and Innsbruck, were both good stops. We went out of our way not to visit Hallstat. Instead we took a short rail trip to Zwölferhorn, and had a pint. The Transalpin train from Innsbruck to Zurich was amazing. Just be very careful when ordering tickets. We were in 1st class, but we didn't get the car that had the wrap around windows. Still a great trip, but a little disappointed that we didn't get the car we thought we were getting. AI failed on this as well as the web site. The car number has changed recently as well if you use something like Seat61. Both Vienna and Budapest had great public transportation apps. We also used both Bolt and Uber a few times in both locations. Budapest to seem to be the same price for vehicles regardless of what type of vehicle you chose (XL, Luxury, EV, etc.). submitted by /u/JackfruitCrazy51 [link] [comments]
