Scotland on a budget?
Our take
hi all,
my sister and I are planning to go to Scotland in about a year for around 10 days . ive never been to a country this expensive other than my own (usa). what is a good budget to stay in a mid range hotel, meals, activities? we drink but not a lot, most of our trips are more outdoorsy and hike based.
is a car needed? I'm nervous to drive on the left side of the road but can get over it if this will improve my trip.
I'm trying to keep it under 3000 euros for the two of us, not including flights. is this feasible? we are in our 30s so not trying to stay in a hostel unless its a private room.
I know this can all be googled but id rather ask real people on here.

- 13 nights in Scotland itinerary help :)I have been working on an itinerary for a scotland trip that will take place in late September - a little bit of October. We are a group of 4 30 year olds and my 65 year old parents (relatively fit). We definitely want to spend time in the highlands and in Edinburgh, it’s the no car piece I’m struggling with. My mom is very anxious about us driving on the left side of the road and is very against getting a rental car. We are willing to pay for drivers for certain areas, but we’d like to avoid bus tours if possible. Our main focus is dramatic landscapes, castles, picturesque villages with high quality local shops and art, and cultural experiences. We are ok with some shorter hikes, but we are trying to go places with alternatives if the weather ends up being terrible We plan on flying into Edinburgh and staying there for 5 nights and taking a day trip to Stirling At least 3 nights in Skye (we plan on hiring a driver to take us to Skye and stop at locations on the way in Glencoe) and we will hire a day taxi to take us places in Skye This next piece I’m struggling with: - maybe 3 nights in Oban followed by 2 nights in Glasgow? Or maybe add a night to Oban or Skye and then just one night in the final city before flying out? - would one full day in Oban without a car seem like too much? I was thinking for the second day hiring a guide to take us around Glen of Kilmartin or Mull Other options we’re considering instead of Oban - Inverness - seems like it gets a lot of mixed reviews - Pitolchry - any place I’m missing? submitted by /u/es2396 [link] [comments]
- Trip to Ireland & ScotlandHii!! My boyfriend and I are going to Ireland and Scotland for the first time (23 july - 2 aug) We gonna stay for 4 days around Dublin ( no car ) and 6 days in Scotland, where we gonna rent a car. Im looking for places to stay, but cannot find anything besides airbnb rooms in someone’s house. Does anyone know good and CHEAP places to stay around Dublin (where we can go by train) and in Scotland (we have a car so no limit:)) We are just looking for cheap airbnbs, hotels, nice places to stay from where we can do something like hike and explore the area. Also tips are welcome! submitted by /u/Jellyxbean_ [link] [comments]
- Where to go from Edinburgh?Flying in to Edinburgh, solo, mid May. Doing 3-4 days there and then I have about five more days before I have to be back to Edinburgh for my flight home. I had to plan all this last minute so Skye accommodations are completely gone and Rabbies is sold out (not sure about this option anyway). One of my friends suggested Aviemore but I feel it may be very similar to where I live (Colorado). I could fly into Inverness by adding a huge layover but then im stuck fighting for accommodation on Edinburgh to see at it the end with a marathon they are having. I'm on a modest budget and I'm an experience traveler dude in my 30s. I would prefer coast but I'm open to whatever. I want cozy Irish pubs, nature, and scenery outside Edinburgh. I'm good to drive a bit but driving five hours solo on the wrong side of the road sounds less than fun for skye. Maybe I can drive part. Any thoughts are appreciated and thank you. A route of train or car combo or cool towns other than aviemore. Or if someone like might would like rabbies if one tour opens. submitted by /u/outdoorsnstuffz [link] [comments]
- Scotland: How realistic is this itinerary?Hi everyone! I’m starting planning my honeymoon in Scotland and wanted some advice. I’ve heard that whatever the google maps driving time is, I should probably double it in Scotland. I’ve tried to give myself plenty of transit time to see and explore on travel days. Does this look realistic or will I be missing a lot in these locations? Day 1: home to Edinburgh (flight & train) Day 2-5: Edinburgh Day 6: rent car and travel to Isle of Skye Day 7/8: Isle of Skye Day 9: drive to Orkney Islands Day 10/11: Orkney Islands Day 12: drive to Inverness, explore city and maybe surrounding areas Day 13: Cairngorms NP Day 14: Tavel to London Day 15: travel home submitted by /u/Outdoormore [link] [comments]
