Suggestions for family -friendly destination?
Our take
I am looking for some suggestions of amazing family-friendly destinations as options for a trip.
Kids will be 7 and 5.
Trip would be 2-3 weeks long.
Any time in 2027.
Travel leaving from central Canada.
Excluding USA destinations.
We are not "sit on the beach" people (one beach day is fine, but we are "explore the local culture" type people).
I'd love your recommendations of location, as well as if you have advice about best/worst time of year to visit.
And I'd also love "must see/do/stay" suggestions!
Any destination is fair game as long as it's safe, and you want to recommend it. I've traveled to about 30 countries, but so far we have had limited travel as a family.
So far we have taken the kids on a Caribbean cruise, done a Western Canada Road trip, and a flight out to BC for a 10 day trip.
I've seen some amazing videos about family friendly things in Shanghai, as well as various countries in Europe.
Before kids, we travelled to New Zealand and Australia and loved it. Though I think NZ would be better once the kids are 10+ so they can participate in activities.
The trip is to celebrate a 40th birthday.
Machu Picchu is a bucket list trip, but I don't know if it's doable with young kids?
Thank you!

- 5-7 Day Trip with Two Kids (14, 11)- Looking for Ideas/Narrowing Down IdeasOur kids are finally old enough where we want to take them somewhere "adventureous" and am looking for advice and guidance. My wife and I are rather athletic so no restrictions there. The oldest is as well. It is the youngest who doesn't quite of the stamina for hiking 6 hours or anything but he is plenty fit to handle shorter burst adventures. We would like to stay in North America. A National PArk sounds great but choosing the right one that fits kids stamina + making it worth it for adults seems hard to me. Like we would love to do the Grand Canyon, but we do not believe the youngest could hike down into it and if we are going to go somewhere like that, we want to do it right. Yellowstone, cruise to Alaska, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico were the initial ideas we had. I figured there were more National Parks that aren't as popular as Yellowstone that I don't know of so please shout them out if they are kid friendly-ish. Other than the Smokeys, I've been there so would rather not repeat selfishly. Thanks in advance and let me know any other information you need. submitted by /u/MindofShadow [link] [comments]
- Best/favourite places to travel with a family in January? We’re a family of 4 (2 kids aged 7 and 9) looking to travel to somewhere (or possibly multiple destinations) for around 4 weeks in January. We’re from Australia and would prefer somewhere outside of Australia. We’ve also been to Thailand, Bali and New Zealand a few times and Vietnam once so would prefer somewhere new. Our kids are at an age now where they fly well, are happy to try different foods and are happy to do a mix of activities (cultural sites, walks, etc. mixed in with more typical kid friendly activities). We’re open to warm or cold destinations. Any recommendations? submitted by /u/cloudiedayz [link] [comments]
- Help us choose our next destination! (traveling with children!)Hey everyone! This several travel subs were super helpful when we planned our Lisbon trip, so I figured I’d come back and ask for ideas for next year 🙌 We just got back from 10 days in Lisbon + Cascais (April, over spring break) with our kids (6 & 9). This trip was their Christmas present—something we started in 2023—and honestly it was a huge success. We have really enjoyed doing this each year and we have found the experience far outlasts the toy or gadget. They handled this trip way better than expected…even hauling their own carry-ons up cobblestone hills and endless stairs. Our Previous Trips: 2024 – Costa Rica All-inclusive base but did a bunch of tours which was a great mix of comfort + culture. We were afraid to take on too much too soon with a four year old and seven year old, but they did every thing they could do and more! 2025 – Playa Mujeres, Mexico Kids loved the resort life (waterslides, etc.), but we felt like we missed out on exploring/adventure. We had a great time, but we were missing something! 2026 – Lisbon, Portugal (favorite so far) We stayed in an Airbnb Sintra was highlight of the entire trip (castles, food, scenery…we wish we stayed there longer). I could have stayed here for multiple days! It was so beautiful! Lisbon: loved wandering, river views, São Jorge Castle (peacocks were a hit) Cascais: least favorite overall (weather didn’t help), BUT had some of our best meals Kids did great! Two days over 35k steps.... including hikes up to Moorish Castle and Pena Palace (on separate days) ....every day was 20,000 plus. We’re are a family that loves: hiking beaches history viewpoints/castles/ruins good food (this is non-negotiable) Portugal checked all those boxes. I’m still thinking about the breakfasts, pastries, yogurt, and breads! Now trying to plan 2027 👀 We’d likely travel: late March / early April OR summer We want somewhere that has: great food walkability outdoor adventure + scenery some history/culture mixed in My husband and I are doing Ireland (Dublin, Galway, Doolin) this July without the kids (quick 5-day trip, trying to make the most of his PTO). If we love it, we might go back with them and explore more, but I’m open to totally different ideas too. I didn’t travel growing up, so being able to do this with our kids is really special to us. Hoping they’re learning a lot about the world along the way ❤️ Would LOVE any suggestions—Europe or elsewhere! Thanks in advance!! submitted by /u/Flimsy_Assumption265 [link] [comments]
- Need help planning next tripMy husband and I would like to travel with our 16-month-old this upcoming September. We went to Portugal last September all together and had an incredible time. But now we can’t seem to make a decision. We keep going back and forth but we have narrowed it down to the following destinations (in no particular order): - Greece (Crete or Naxos/Paros) - Croatia (Dalmatian Coast) - Italy (Sicily and/or Sardinia) - Costa Rica - Andalusia - Balearic Islands I would like gorgeous beaches and charming towns, while my husband would like a place rich with history and activities/excursions to do. We would also like a place that is family friendly, and food is important as well. We have between 10-14 days so we’re thinking 2-3 bases would be ideal. We have no issues with renting a car, but we would like to keep travel time to a minimum (i.e. proximity to a major airport, easy ferry access, limited flights). We’re from a major Canadian hub so bonus points for direct flights. submitted by /u/Commercial-Cattle-89 [link] [comments]
