Us Westcoast and Hawaii
Our take
Hello,
we (M 33, W 30) plan to travel the US-Westcoast and Hawaii as our Honeymoon-trip this september.
We start with two nights in San Francisco and then drive down the Highway 1 with a rented car. We stop at Pismo Beach for one night and then Palm Springs for another night. At this point we skip LA and go to Grand Canyon Village to stay there for one night. Next stop is Page, also for one night and the day after, we go to Bryce Canyon Village. Another night later we drive to Las Vegas. Next day we drive to our last stopover - Los Angeles. We stay there for one night and then fly to Hawaii (Kauai) in the afternoon. There we will stay 7 nights in Kapa'a.
Of course we wanna see the most common attractions, but we are not really there for city-trips. We are looking forward to see nature and landscape and would do a few hikes. Yosemite Nationalpark we skip intensionally, 'cause landscape there is very similar to where we live (Austria). That's why we do the longer and more stressful route to the Canons - the kind of landscape we have never seen before until now.
We would love to get some advice/tips for places we should absolutely visit and some general advice for travelling the USA.
Thank you!!
Edit: The fligths are booked and also the 2 nights in San Francisco. The route between San Francisco and Los Angeles ist still changeable. So If you have any sugestions how to optimize the trip for less driving, feel free to tell us.

- Planning a California trip — would love some advice 🙏So, me and my husband are planning a 2 week trip to the US, flying in and out of San Francisco and we will have a car for the whole trip. Ideally, I want a mix of cities, scenic drives, and 1 week based in LA (not rushed). We came up with this plan and wanted some actual experienced people to maybe give their advice. So here's the plan: Days 1–3: San Francisco Day 1: Arrival, Embarcadero, Ferry Building, easy dinner Day 2: Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, Presidio, Marina Day 3: Alcatraz (morning), Mission District, Dolores Park, Twin Peaks sunset Day 4: Drive SF → Monterey / Carmel Stops: Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, 17-Mile Drive Overnight in Carmel or Monterey Day 5: Big Sur → Santa Barbara Bixby Bridge, scenic Big Sur stops Overnight in Santa Barbara Days 6–12: Los Angeles (7 nights, likely West Hollywood base) Day 13: LA → Palm Springs / Joshua Tree Drive to Palm Springs (~2h), optional Joshua Tree sunset Overnight in Palm Springs Day 14: Drive back via Yosemite → San Francisco Very early start Quick Yosemite Valley stops Continue to SF for departure Main questions: Is Day 14 (Palm Springs → Yosemite → SF) too unrealistic? Would you break that into 2 days? If yes, where’s the best stop? Any must-stop places along the coast I’m missing? Is 7 nights in LA too much / too little? Any areas you’d change for staying in LA? Any place I'm missing on the way? Generally, any improvement to this plan would be welcome. Open to all suggestions — especially from people who’ve done a similar loop 🙌 submitted by /u/balialu [link] [comments]
- Advice for traveling within the US?I (20M) and my girlfriend (20F) want to start traveling. my 21st is in a few weeks which i know is going to help. So will hers be by the time we take our first trip most likely. We are from the southeast of the US. Neither of us have really been out of the south, at all. I have been as far as the keys, and dallas (I was not in charge). No farther north than NC. We like to take day trips. Do that once every month or two. First trip I/we ever took where I was in charge was new year this year we went to hilton head and got an airbnb for the weekend. But I wanna start taking big trips. I have never flown. I also am not ready financially for this right now (obviously just wanna plan for now), but would like to be ready to take my first big trip within 6 ish months. My biggest places on my bucket list are New england, Pacific northwest, and California. More specifically: - Boston + cape cod/nantucket/marthas vineyard in the summer, Acadia national park, portland maine, and driving through the region in the fall. Also wanna try lobster rolls - Portland/Seattle, cannon beach, oregon/washington coast + nature, maybe olympic national park (and other good nature spots out there) Also wanna try their coffee. - orange county and san diego (yes san diego and not LA with orange county, I am not necessarily against LA, but SD is more my style) Also wanna try their mexican food. - Sacramento, lake tahoe, and yosemite. Things that are important in helping choose a place include cool swimming water, cleanliness, friendly people or at least not rude, good food/coffee/chill bar scene, populated but not overcrowded, mix of nature/coast/city/crazy landscapes we’ve never seen before. etc. Also, my girlfriend wants to do these things too but isn’t nearly as picky as I am and trusts me to plan as long as we discuss and agree on what we do. Any tips, ideas, places I didn’t list I should add, etc all would be good. My budget I am thinking might be 2.5k low end to 3.5k high end, stay maybe a week ish? Not sure, open to suggestions these aren’t firm. Dates maybe sometime between august and october, but again nothing set in stone. Also - I would like to travel outside the US but want to get used to at least my country first before going abroad. submitted by /u/EffortGrouchy685 [link] [comments]
- West Coast USA Trip Ideas?Order of wants: Nature/mountains with some hiking Good vegetarian food options Potential for pop culture stuff (we’re huge movie people) Husband and I got married a month ago and still don’t know where to go for our honeymoon. We initially had Seattle chosen for hiking and Twin Peaks (tv show) locations, but I’ve already been to Seattle and think we should go somewhere entirely new. We’re from Chicago and my husband has never seen mountains, so I really want to be sure we see some for him. I also thought of going to Redwoods, but it seems like a lot of driving/traveling to and from airports and central areas. We’ll probably rent a car and have 6 full days of traveling - maybe in June. Please help plan our trip lol :( submitted by /u/walgreensfan [link] [comments]
- Pacific West Coast Romantic Getawayhi! my (27f) boyfriend (31m) and I want to take a trip to the PWC this year for vacation. We are looking at going sometime in September, as the prices for where we are looking seem better around that time of year. We love to travel together. We love both beach and mountain vacations. We really enjoy hiking, sightseeing, the beach, and cute little towns with great food//local small businesses. Excursion wise, we really just like to relax or hike, but we do like to kayak, fish and do boat tours/rides as well. My boyfriend does not drink. We are planning to go for about 4-5 nights. We will also be renting a car. Mainly looking at between end of August - Early October. Here’s our thoughts/ideas so far, and where has stood out to us: - Carmel//Monterey, California: this has always been a dream destination of mine in the US. Seems like the best of both worlds destination - hiking, views, the beach, cute town. Definitely the priciest of our options, so the hotel/room options aren’t the best, but we don’t care much for aesthetics, we just want a clean place. I really want to visit Big Sur, and so this is why it’s my top option personally. So so tough to find hotels/places to stay IN Big Sur, without paying an arm and a leg (and kidney, with some places lol) - Cannon Beach, Oregon: this is my second choice, and my boyfriend’s first. We both have never been to Oregon. Another place that offers best of both worlds with hiking/beach, it looks like. It’s also more in our price budget - and we could get a nicer hotel within the same price range as Carmel in CA’s options. - Near Los Angeles, we’ve been eyeing Newport Beach: I’ve personally been to Los Angeles before and loved it - but didn’t do anything beach/hiking related when I went years ago lol. My boyfriend is interested in seeing the city, but it’s not his first choice by any means. Planning//looking here has been a little more stressful with the amount of options available, it’s a little harder to narrow down. It’s lower on our list of options because we travel to cities often, and we want a more laid back “vibe” around us if that makes sense - Finally, Catalina Island in CA. Have not done much research here besides hearing good reviews from friends. Just an option we’ve thrown in the air. Any recommendations/thoughts would be SO HELPFUL!! thank you in advance! submitted by /u/foreverplt [link] [comments]
