Which countries used to have limited international visitors are now popular destinations?
Our take
I saw a post recently asking about places that used to receive a lot of tourists but are now a shell of their former selves and that got me thinking the opposite, which countries used to receive limited tourism but are now much more popular destination amongst travelers.
I think the first two that come to mind are Vietnam and Colombia and the numbers speak for themselves:
- In 1995, Vietnam only received 1.3 million international tourists vs ~20 million in 2025
- In 1995, Colombia received less than 500k international tourists vs 6.6 million in 2025 (and are on pace to surpass Brazil and Argentina to be the most visited South American country)
Which countries also had a similar upward trajectory in tourism over the past several years or decades?

- Which countries have gone from more 'niche' travel destinations to mainstream?I’ve been noticing how many countries seem to go from relatively unknown or niche to very popular in a very short time. An example that comes to mind is Taiwan: 5 years ago I would be really surprised if someone told me they'd go there, but not anymore. It's all over social media and I've heard several people going there this year, for college or just for the food I guess. Have you noticed this too, and for which countries? P.S. I realize that this might sound a bit selfish or gatekeepy, and it might indeed be. Of course I don't have more rights to go to these countries than others. But I can't deny that the travel experience has changed for me now that everyone is everywhere all the time. The world feels so small.
