Vietnam or Japan June 2026
Our take
I'm from Ireland and planning on travelling in May and June 2026.
I am visiting Malaysia first - then Taiwan - then Hong Kong. I'll enter Mainland China from Hong Kong.
I was originally going to move from China - to South Korea - to Japan - then home via either Canada or Singapore.
But to reduce costs I'm thinking now instead of South Korea and Japan (and Canada or Singapore), instead I'll go to Vietnam from China and spend 1 - 2 weeks in Vietnam then head home to Europe.
How does Vietnam compare to South Korea and Japan?
Should I do South Korea and Japan as part of this Asia trip, or should I instead do appx 2 weeks in Vietnam? I'd like to know the pros and cons of both.

- Travel to two countries (Japan and Taiwan) or prioritise one country for a longer stay?I will be in Mainland China for work later in the year and I’m looking to take advantage of being in Asia before heading home to Europe. I spent two weeks in Japan last year (Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo and Sapporo) and had the absolute best time. I definitely want visit again and I’ve heard great things about Sendai so I’ve chosen to pair a few days there with some time in Tokyo before flying to Taipei, another place I’ve always wanted to visit. I’m pretty happy with my basic travel itinerary below, but I’m wondering if anyone has done a similar trip or thinks it would be better to prioritise one place instead of both Japan and Taiwan? I honestly don’t know if I’m unnecessarily trying to squeeze any time I can get in Japan and sacrificing more extensive travel in Taiwan… Saturday 10/10 - Travel to Tokyo from Beijing early in the AM. Arrive in Tokyo and take the bullet train to Sendai. Sunday 11/10 - Sendai Monday 12/10 - Sendai Tuesday 13/10 - Sendai/Travel to Tokyo later in the day Wednesday 14/10 - Tokyo Thursday 15/10 - Tokyo Friday 16/10 - Tokyo/Travel to Taipei later in the day Saturday 17/10 - Taipei Sunday 18/10 - Taipei Monday 19/10 - Taipei Tuesday 20/10 - Taipei Wednesday 21/10 - Taipei/Fly home in the evening submitted by /u/notveronicacrabtree [link] [comments]
- 3 weeks off this Month — Where to go?Hey everyone; I have a gift card for Air Canada $2000 and I have time off! I boiled it down to South Korea, Singapore + Malay, Japan (I’ve been here two years ago) or France. Budget is $2k CAD not including flights. I’m into nature, culture, architecture. In my early 30’s a solo male traveller. Because I also have time off, I sorta want to optimize for that but idk. I’m flying out of Toronto. If I go to France I wouldn’t be able to go for a full 2.5 weeks due to how expensive it is. Flight would be Toronto > France. Japan, I’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hakone, Kamakura and loved it and this was the last time I’ve left the country. I’d be going to Hiroshima & Tokyo for 2 weeks. Flight would be either Toronto to Tokyo or Toronto > Montreal > Japan. South Korea, It’s a bit of a toss up since I’ve heard mixed things from my friends who is South Korean. She said because I don’t drink, party or care for many material things, it might be a bit “stale.” Flight would be Toronto > South Korea. Singapore + Malaysia, sounds like the best fit but if I’m planning on going to Thailand for a longer trip, next January, it feels like I can combine this with it, to be more efficient. The flight would also be Toronto > Vancouver > Singapore. I’m also a bit worried about disruptions with commutes due to the energy crisis war. I wouldn’t mind also taking my Dad since he’d love to go but that wouldn’t be until later this year or next year. Options not limited to this but I’ll be using my Air Canada gift card. Any suggestions? 🙏🏽 submitted by /u/Ok_Cabinet4457 [link] [comments]
